There's been a lot of shitflinging on my TL concerning this tweet. Honestly, I'm not sure. Can the "not touching the opposite sex" thing can be just a quaint local tradition or is this necessarily associated with misogyny and patriarchy?
I don't think I've ever known a Muslim like that but in my experience orthodox jews like that are more likely to be misogynistic than not...
He gives "shilling for rebranded al-Qaeda and is thus doing the work of Zionists and part of hasbara whether he likes it or not" vibes.
But at the same time, here's the lady that replied to him:
I think I'm reserving judgement on this one until I know more about him specifically. If he can acknowledge that HTS is horrible and they are the friends of the imperialists and Zionists, then I'm willing to cut him some slack because the criticism is coming from a place of islamophobia.
If he gives unwitting Zionist vibes, then she's just a shameless Zionist lmao
I saw this lady's horrible tweet too, but I think it's fair to say most of the discussion happened outside of its context, before people unearthed it.
That's fair, but I think it's always important to keep in mind that when people make broad criticisms of the culture in a majority Muslim country they're usually not doing so with any amount of nuance or perspective. And it also definitely vindicates the "white woman moment" comment.

The question is not whether al jolani is or not a misogynist, all signs point to yes. And if the person said "I won't go to a country where I will not feel I will be respected and treated fairly", we would likely not be having this conversation, because that is a fairly reasonable position to take, especially when we're talking about people who don't have to face the misogyny of the islamist taking over Syria, because they're a tourist picking a destination.
The point is to what extent white supremacy, and specifically white feminism, fails to recognize and uphold the humanity and agency of other marginalized interlocutors by exoticizing their treatment of women, essentializing misogyny into the identities of oppressed peoples, and creating a hierarchy of oppressions which eventually excludes women of color, and robs them of their agency. It comes from entitlement, not solidarity.
I may be reading too much into a one-line post, but this whole interaction doesn't strike me as one of good faith criticism between allies in a context of intersectional solidarity.

Revolutionary defeatism but for culture. If I grew up and lived in a Muslim majority country I'm sure I would have an opinion about it, but as is I don't feel the need to have strong opinions about the stuff I don't like about other cultures while my culture is so terrible.
Maybe it's the "grass greener on the other side" type situation. I like to believe my culture—Russian culture—is very salvageable, despite what it looks like right now...
When I say "my culture" I'm referring to anglo-canadian culture, Russia actually has a culture to salvage lol

I do like Shakespeare and gay rights but I don't know how popular those things are with your average Canadian right now. You have to study a bunch of Shakespeare in high school which people generally don't like lol.
And the right has been having just as much success in the culture war here as they have in america. I dunno if Canadians would vote away gay marriage if they could, but we are just as stupid and bigoted as americans unfortunately

Hella people don't really shake hands anyway. I don't really think it matters. Like, would I prefer this rule to not exist? Sure, but there are almost certainly more important things to focus on. This is way more petty compared to so much of what women deal with under patriarchy.
