Everything about Metal Slug (pre 4) is so high effort. A lot of love and effort went into them and it shows.

Night Striker's a favorite of mine. Also gonna shout out Battle Circuit, Raiden DX, and Exerion. (if you can get used to the momentum simulation)

Tetris the grand Master 2 plus
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara. It's a side-scrolling beat-em-up by Capcom with RPG elements like armor and weapons, branching paths and multiple endings.
DD SOM is literally my fav arcade game of all time!
How was Tower of Doom? Never played that one
Very good! But it's bare bones compared to SOM since Capcom was kind of figuring out how to make the plunge of converting the pen and paper game to the arcades.
I like plain old stuff like Ms. Pacman. Stuff like Centipede kinda needs a joystick.

Aliens vs Predator
Primal Rage (maybe, sometimes fighting games can be played alright with a keyboard)
DJ Boy (Streets of Rage beatum-up on roller skates/blades)
Espgaluda, or really any Cave game imo but I especially like this one and MAME is the best way to play it. The slowdown in the CV1000 games isn't very accurate*, but everything else should emulate great. Battle Garegga is another good game if you are a sicko.
*You can lower the CPU speed in the settings for those games and it makes it feel good enough, but it's still not really accurate and there's not just a default Good setting for it either. Usually around 50% is close enough iirc.
I was always into those side scroller, beat em ups. Final Fight, Combatribes, Aliens, DJ Boy, Turtles in Time, Golden Axe, Battletoads, Bad Dudes, Ninja Gaiden. there's so many and I dumped so many quarters as a kid that I took special delight in beating the shit out of them in MAME with infinite credits.
that's all I remember for now, but if I think of any more I'll name drop them.
