Just look at the lips, squinty eyes and Wakka hair on this magnificent specimen. I wonder what female Japanese gamers would have thought of THIS Solid Snake data-laughing

Also, why does this very green and EXTREMELY 90s looking Meryl have some kind of Iron Age shortsword on her belt?

I have to know if this magazine was around for MGS2- their version of Raiden must have been transcendent. They would've probably drawn him to look like Dolph Lundgren as He-Man

EDIT

I just chortled at this goofy magazine cover illustration but apparently someone at Konami liked it enough that it was actually used as the cover for the manual of MGS: Integral in Japan

That is just Wakka with more clothing.

These were literally drawn by a comic book artist. Joe Madureira. He worked on Uncanny X-Men and he's also worked in video game development. He helped with the designs for Darksiders

Now these covers are kind of goofy, but they're also pretty cool. The guy's a talented artist. He's just infused with the essence of the '90s

Yeah, from what I read it looks like they hired actual comic book artists to draw each of these covers, and not like, the editor's nephew like I had assumed

I had a subscription to PSM and I had this issue! I remember them doing an april fools joke where they photoshopped a nude lara croft into game screens claiming they found "the code", ah young me was wowed to say the least.

Looking at archived copies of this magazine at retrogamemags, it seems like PlayStation characters in 90s comic book art was their thing. These are just delightful- look at this Jamer Sunderland

Now that's the face of a man mourning his wife

I believe that was a mod that got urban legend’ed into being a supposed secret code available in the base game. Which is funny as it’s not the only time in the 90’s an April Fools joke by a gaming magazine got spread as truth. EGM photoshopped Sheng Long into SFII screen shots as a joke and players fell for it.

Yeah, there was a mod called Nude Raider that Eidos wasn't happy about, they tried to shut the site down.

edit: I wonder if this inspired the damage control done by Rockstar over Hot Coffee in GTA: SA, iirc they initially tried to claim it was user created.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My memory was that the hot coffee thing was in the game as shipped but it could only be accessed with a mod

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

It was in the game, but Rockstar claimed it was created by modders. https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/hackers-behind-sex-change-says-grand-theft-maker/

Incredible headline out of context.

Man I’ve been in Japan for months and have yet to see a single MGS related thing, very sad. Meanwhile evangelion posters and figures are everywhere and I hear cruel angel’s thesis at least once a week. I thought MGS was pretty big but maybe just in the west? I even went to a paremovedo parlor hoping to find the fabled MGS3 paremovedo machine, no luck

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago

To be fair, there hasn't been a new game out in a while and the MGS3 pacheenko machine was like 10 years ago. I assume those things get replaced pretty regularly
