That Lightning end is huge. There has to be something going on there that makes this cost this much. This has to be be niche though. Only with equipment or accessories where you can't replace the cable.

Was lightning a proprietary communication protocol? If so, probably an active signal translator in the lightning end.

I think you’re right. It’s capable of outing video but doesn’t have enough pins to be usb 3.
