WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Monday he’s placing the Washington, D.C., police department under federal control and deploying the National Guard to make the nation’s capital safer.

Trump has promised new steps to tackle homelessness and crime in Washington, prompting the city's mayor to voice concerns about the potential use of the National Guard to patrol the streets.

Ahead of a news conference, Trump said Monday on social media that the nation's capital would be “LIBERATED today!” He said he would end the “days of ruthlessly killing, or hurting, innocent people.”

Violent crime in Washington D.C. is actually at a 30 year low.

He can only do this for 30 days, then congress has to pass a law extending it. Wonder if Congress bends the knee? I have no doubts they will, and it'll be another example of their cowardice.

DC has seen record lows in crime. This is all Trump going crazy.

I continue to be baffled that people assume that the orangeboi regime “has” to do anything.

They don’t, and nobody who has the barest shred of power to do fucking anything about it is actually doing anything to stop it. They are, and will continue to, categorically ignore laws, court orders, precedent, convention, and so on. They demonstrably do not give a shit.

Stop fucking pretending that this is a normal situation and a normal government. It’s not. The last 4 years were our Weimar Republic era. This 4 (+ ???) year span will be when they do the Enabling Act, citizenship/blood and honor laws, the Treachery Act (honestly wouldn’t even be surprised if they used the same fucking name for it), the Malicious Practices Act, and so on. There is a playbook, and they’re following it.

Americans: Really wish they would turn these awful alarms off

You're putting an awful lot of faith in the fact that literally anyone will stop him from doing this longer than 30 days. Congress has to pass a law to extend it? Says who? The law? I don't reckon Trump cares much about a silly little thing like the law.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 16 points 4 days ago

More importantly, the law doesn't care about holding Trump accountable in any way, shape, or form. Convicted on 34 felony counts, absolutely no consequences.

Laws. Do. Not. Apply. To. Trump.

[–] unphazed@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

This. And if those elected shun order and obedience, then the populace must recognize that social and legal contracts are broken.

Trump and his team realized long ago that they can essentially make any claim, no matter how outrageous or obviously fabricated on the spot, and their base will still lap it up and keep supporting them.

When the objective truth is no longer an obstacle because you've essentially got a reality-distortion field (thanks Fox)...

Faux News tends to reign in super crazy shit every now and then. They still like to speak in enuendo, dog whistles, and veiled accusations. Newsmax on the other hand goes all out like slathering beasts like they're the Onion on bath salts and Krokodil.

The Grand Ol' Pedophiles are traitors to the United States of America. Of course they'll bend the knee.
