Can this game be played without being a paypig? Looks alright.

Not yet(still in closed beta), you can however play POE1 for free.

No sorry. I meant if getting a dignified experience is dependent on buy subscriptions and microtransactions etc.

they sell stash tabs which aren't technically required but end up being necessary in practice.

they also force you to see other people and their mtx in town which can cause issues because the mtx used to constantly get flashier and more obtuse.

subscriptions, no

microtransactions yes, the stash tabs that are pretty much mandatory are in order of importance: currency, maps, fragments ---> everything else

most value for money are the bundles where you get some fancy full mtx and a lot of ingame currency

the worst part about their mtx stuff is that all the league bundles and season passes are heavily based on FOMO

Like others have said, you don't need a subscription or anything. I personally haven't paid a dime for anything in POE1 or 2. (I actually got a key for PoE2 by randomly playing PoE1 at like 4am a few months ago and happening to see someone shouting out keys in server chat & decided to try redeeming it and to my surprise it worked but like REEEEvolution said - PoE2 is in early access right now so 99% of people are gonna have to buy it)

MTX is debatable - I personally don't have any stash tabs on PoE2 but I can see why anyone who is playing more than like 20-30 minutes here and there (or doing like hardcore) would want to spend the $15-20 on a bunch of stash tabs for maps, fragments, trading etc. They aren't really needed for the campaign though imo. Would definitely recommend at the very least just downloading PoE1 and playing the campaign if you want to try it out - it is free.
