This is an Austrian company that offers mobile payments with barcode/qr-code in shops in Austria and Germany, as well as in a few places in Italy and Luxembourg.

I use it since one year. It works fine, but it could definitely use more attention, so that more shops start to accept it. What are your thoughts on that?

Your typical barcode has three starting digits, which identify the country, where the manufacturer is licensed. This does not strictly require the product to be made there. It is a starting point though. and you can do this easily. All codes with the three starting digits between 001 and 139 are licensed in the US

Example:

400 -> Manufacturer had his barcode licensed in Germany

807 -> Manufacturer had his barcode licensed in Italy, San Marino or Vatican

EDIT: 509 -> Manufacturer had his barcode licensed in the UK despite US product.

082 -> Manufacturer had his barcode licensed in the US

Still use your common sense. For produce check the country of origin, as often produce is sold under the brand of the reseller. Typical US imports include soy-beans and nuts.

I'm trying Lunatask. It's a one-man project, and the author is from the Czech Republic. The software looks interesting, complete, and visually appealing. It also stands out from a privacy perspective, offering end-to-end encryption.

We’ve launched a small initiative called european-startups.eu to bring together all European startups, brands, products, and initiatives in one place. We are a group of people working in different areas within the IT space, but all with a shared goal: to make European startups more visible.

While there are platforms like ProductHunt and other websites showcasing EU products and alternatives, we wanted to combine the best of both.

We've introduced a voting system where you can upvote projects you like. Each week, the featured projects will change, and the winners will be highlighted on our website. A newsletter will also be sent to subscribers with updates. No sponsorships, no shady practices. The only option we may consider is adding sponsors to a separate page or to the footer with a very minimal logo.

Additionally, we’re running our own AI locally, connected to DNB & VIES, to gather EU companies into one easy-to-navigate list.

We already got featured in some areas, so I hope our server is powerful enough to handle the traffic. We still have a lot to do.

PS Fun fact: we used 16-core 32gb from Hetzner to run all these fancy stuff. 😄

edit: After reading the privacy notice (which is only available after Installation), it seems they are using Gemini AI for identifikation, so Take the results with a grain of Salt. Could have been better utilizing Mistral or a Database Like FDDB directly.

For the people who have not yet decided on a search engine. The most EU way you can go is Ecosia or Qwant as they are building their own search index.

Ecosia is my personal pick as its also aimed at planting trees and they have quite a good browser alongside it.

• Paying online, especially to small vendors
• Ordering food and everyday purchases

I've heard about Bunq, Klarna, Revolut, and N26, but I'm not sure which one would be best for my needs. Has anyone had experience with these services in Germany? Which would you recommend and why?

I've decided to make some significant changes in my digital life. I've taken the plunge and am rooting out most US-based services from my usage list. This includes canceling all my streaming subscriptions, putting my Reddit account in cold storage, and deleting my Twitter accounts. Additionally, I'm in the process of removing my presence from Meta platforms. This shift is part of my effort to simplify and re-evaluate my online habits and dependencies.

One of the primary reasons for this change is the importance of bolstering the EU economy. By supporting European companies and services, I believe we can foster innovation and growth within our own region. This not only strengthens our economic independence but also encourages the development of solutions tailored to our specific needs and values.

In my exploration of EU-based alternatives, I've found that while they may be slightly more expensive, they often offer superior technology and usability. The focus on quality, privacy, and user experience in many European products aligns with my personal values and expectations.
