If you derive your personal self worth by the literal skin-deep appraisal of internet strangers then you are mentally unwell.

That's not a "self-esteem booster" that's you taking a hit of a "virtual drug" because you can't produce your own self-esteem. You literally get high from it and then come crashing back down.

Carraway could be some kind of self-help guru that Gatsby hires for himself. Silicon Valley loves that faux-hippy crap, right? Gives an excuse for him to be there (he lives with him because he's like a life coach) and for him to stand in for the audience. He's basically there to evaluate his character and so can easily do that without seeming forced.

Like he starts out with this just being another gig with a weirdo tech bro before actually starting to like him and understand his personality more than he usually does.

Assuming a modern day remake because period pieces are hard.

Does Old Money/New Money still apply today? I know in the book it's basically one of the reasons why Gatsby doesn't get on well with a lot of folks but does it still have the same kind of hostility?

If not is there anything you could bring in to recreate that same dynamic? Something that makes Gatsby rich but not "rich" if you get my meaning.
