The homes that are not being built are the upwards ones. It's literally impossible for us to sprawl our way out of this. Density is key when it comes to man-hours per unit.

Is that a concession? I don't think he actually wants to be president anymore.

Don't get me wrong, it's the correct "deal" to make - it's the most overt declaration he can make to those who claim he wants to be dictator for life - I just think it's probably a win/win for him.

Also, while it seems such an order is legal - should it be?

If these were legally obtained photos, why should someone be compelled to delete them? Compelled deletion is a slippery slope. Shared a legally purchased mp3 with a friend? Delete it. Shared a picture of Beyonce at the Superbowl? Delete it.

Is it possible to just use our lemmy accounts to log in? My understanding of activity pub and the fedeverse is that it should be possible, but maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

It's simply not possible to drop housing prices significantly until we get a reasonable supply. Right now (and until the end of the decade) demand is predicted to exceed supply of new housing by about 4:1 (i.e. we need to build about 4x as many new units as we currently are).

There are some mechanisms to reduce some demand like vacant housing tax, increased taxes on second+ properties, and banning non resident purchases, but it still comes back to supply and demand.

In theory, once supply exceeds demand, house prices should start to fall. There really isn't any other sustainable mechanism to significantly reduce housing prices until that point. Government owned and subsidized housing is one way that we have attempted in the past, and I think it's a good idea, but it won't actually reduce prices except for those lucky enough to get one of these units.

Each of the parties has a plan to increase housing supply, targeting different aspects of the supply chain. It's a good first step, and realistically all that they can do in a single term.

You're going to have to find a different line of reasoning. There's enough people out there that don't care enough about other humans that might be slightly different than themselves. You're never going to convince them that a bunch of chickens deserve empathy when they don't even have empathy for their fellow (hu)man.

  • New Orlean's Pizza
  • East Side Mario's
  • St. Louis Bar & Grill

Not American-named, but Swiss Chalet is also Canadian.

I suspect most "foreign" named restaurants will never actually be from that place.

I think you fundamentally misunderstand what Amazon is removing. From your linked article:

Once this feature goes away, you’ll still be able to manually copy ebook files and other documents to Kindles over USB using Amazon’s apps or third-party solutions like Calibre. You just won’t be able to download copies of your purchased books to a computer.

The only thing Amazon is removing is the ability to save books that you purchased from them. No more personal backups of legally purchased material, but piracy is still fair game.

My uncle Gord Poutine is already on his way to DC with a box of matches.

It's much easier for someone on the inside to do it. Less political and the successor won't feel obligated to start/continue a war. It's why America sends the CIA to Venezuela (et al) instead of missiles.

Their factories in Nevada, Texas, and China all have a lot of extra space and/or land for expansion. They've also been considering building more factories in Mexico, another one in Europe, and possibly SE Asia, though it's unclear whether any of those are going to materialize - especially with the current downturn in sales.

Their batteries may not be special, but if they can scale to what they were promising a few years ago (which is a much bigger "if" than it used to be), their battery business could easily surpass BYD's, which could justify its current market cap on its own (but not much higher).

I've got mixed feelings on FSD. I think it's nearly "solved" for places with nice climate, but I think there's a lot of work needed to deal with inclement weather like snow and slush and even heavy rain. I don't think any company has any idea how to solve that issue, so they're just pushing it down the road until someone else solves it first.
