I use SMTP2GO (with my own domain) with the free plan (1000 email per month) that's way over a selfhoster needs.

I've read the article and I couldn't see any implication of Seagate. I'm not saying anything about your story, shame on Seagate, but I don't see what that has to do with the scandal in the article.

The entire point of selfhost is to host private services not available to the public
Probably your entire point, a lot of self hosters self host services that family members and friends can reach most of the time without the need of a VPN. This very community is full of examples.

It’s infinitely more secure

I'm with you about that.

There’s simply no room for an argument.

As stated in the other post, I'm sorry about that, I'm here to discuss and learn, if you don't have room for an argument, our discussion ends here.

VPN is objectively better in all possible situations.

Exactly! in all possible situation!!!

[–] peregus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Only a hardware firewall would do this. If it’s software, like implied in your post, no traffic is filtered and all connections are accepted.

Talking abut netfilter, since it manages also the forwardning, it for some strange reason it should crash, NO IP traffic is flowing

VPN is the least amount of work for the most secure setup. There’s nothing to even argue, its superior in every way.

If there's nothing to even argue, then I say goodby to you since I'm here to discuss. All the best!

Well...if you edit your post after someone has replied to it at least specify what's you've edited and don't pretend that the answer that somebody else has already given you wasn't about your non edited post!
If you (my mistake) wrote VPS instead of VPN, you can't pretend that I've answered about VPN!
If you can convince your family member and your friends to use a VPN to use your service, that's good for you, and I mean it!
But saying that it's quite impossible to do that, I think that I'm speaking for 99% of the self hoster (is this correct in English? Bah, you got me!)

[–] peregus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If for whatever reason your firewall is down, there’s unrestricted access to your server…

I don't know what kind of firewall you use, but if my firewall is down there is NO traffic at all passing through!

And by the way, since I've replied to someone that don't want to use VPN because he doesn't want to give access to the whole network, I meant that he could use a VPN AND iptables to restrict the guest access to single services instead of the whole network.

Again, this is the reason VPS’ exist.

What? What's the difference between a VPS and your home server? You may say that's a good practice to separate things, so maybe have a a VM with public facing services and another with more private stuff reachable only with a VPN. But for something like Nextcloud, it needs to be public (if you're not the only one using it), but it contains personal stuff and then comes the OP request!

You're right! I've seen the offer and usually they're just for the first piece, but for that item there are no limits.

[–] peregus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Just out of curiosity, why do you disconnect from your home VPN?

[–] peregus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (4 children)

For that, you can restrict access to a single service with iptables.

Well, the price is 16€. I don't know when the promotion apply

Yesterday I was reading the post about the FUTO keyboard where there were a lot of messages deleted by moderators.
I've commented there

What the heck happened with all the messages deleted by moderator?

And it got deleted. Right now you can only see 4, but I've counted 19 messages moderated and the post has been locked. Why?
I've had a look ad the modlog and the messages don't seems to violate any policy (now they've removed them in the modlog too).

I'm pinging here lemmy.ml admin and the mods of the open source community where the post was posted so they can have their say about it and clarify the situation to me.
@kevincox@lemmy.ml @CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml @Lettuceeatlettuce@lemmy.ml @Cloak@lemmy.ml @davel@lemmy.ml @dessalines@lemmy.ml @nutomic@lemmy.ml @JoeBidet@lemmy.ml @cypherpunks@lemmy.ml

If I'm getting something wrong, please let me know, I'm here to discus and understand if I'm getting something wrong or if something went wrong in the moderation. Thanks!

Down here you can see the deleted comments.

P.s. I'm writing here because I think that this post on lemmy.ml wouldn't last long.

Hi all!
I often struggle to remember where/if I've ordered a product (my email account is a mess, my own fault!), how much I've paid and if it was for me or for some member of my family. Is there a self hosted service that you've tried and find helpful that can do this kind of job?

Hi all! I have a HA server in my LAN and all my IoT devices are in a separate VLAN. In this way to insert all the devices I have to configure them all manually using MQTT commands. Since I'm fed up about this method, I've added a second NIC to the HA VM (Proxmox) that is in the IoT VLAN. When I enter the terminal I see that HA has 2 IPs, one for each network and I thought that all the Shelly (they use the same MQTT broker that uses HA, they're not configured for cloud connection and ColoT is enabled) devices would appear in HA, but...they don't. How do you think that I can troubleshoot this problem?

Hi all! I've just installed Immich and so far I love it! I'm trying to upload about 1000 pictures, but in the upload process (web UI) automatically evaluates the duplicates and don't upload them. The ones that it evaluates as duplicates are not real duplicates, but are rather very similar pictures that I prefer to decide myself which one to keep. Is it possible to disable the duplicate recognition during upload? Thanks!

Hi everybody!
I want to move my selfhosted services from a VPS to a PC in my house.
I have an E5-2620 and a it-6700K, which one would you pick and why?
The E5 already has 2 PCI-X each with 4 NIC (that I need to use with OpnSense to share my Internet connection with my neighbor) that I would need to throw away and buy as PCIe for the i7.
Thanks!

When my PC wake up from sleep, all the windows are in the main display (I have 2) and in the top half. Is there a way to save the windows position every x minutes so that when it wakes up I can restore it?

I want to add a shortcut to create new tab in Konsole, but I want it to be local and not global (CTRL+T is already used by another application). I've searched and it seems that I need to go to Settings → Configure Keyboard Shortcuts, but I don't have the settings anywhere. I read that I should have a menu bar, but...I don't. What's going on with my Konsole??? Thanks!

Hi everybody!
I've just installed Kubuntu and I'm using Linux gui for the first time.
I have 2 4K screens, one horizontal and one vertical. With Windows I divide the horizontal one in 4 equal parts and the vertical in 3 parts so that all are almost 16:9 and each have it's own taskbar that's so useful to me because I know what I've opened in every virtual screen and if in virtual screen there is Outlook, but I need to take in foreground Chrome that I know it's there (but it's also in other screens), I can click on Chrome on the virtual screen 1 taskbar. If there are no multiple taskbar, I would have to click on Chrome on the main taskbar and select which window I need (which can be problematic because not always it's possible to see what's going on in the small preview).

Is this or something similar possible with KDE plasma (I'm on 6.1.5).

Thanks!

Is it possibile to create an IP whitelist? I get constantly banned by different HA servers (home, office, etc.) from my smartphone and everytime I need to edit the ip_bans.yaml file and restart HA.

Hi all!
I have 4 HA servers in different locations (home, officer etc.) and using the 3 fingers to change server every time is a pain in the ass. Is there any way to open the app directly to a specified server? I've had a look at the widget, but I couldn't find anything. Thanks!

Everytime I use Jellyfin I have to add a filter to see only not watched movies, is it possible to save the filters based on users?

Edit: I'm using the web GUI

Hi community!
I'm in the process of building a new office PC for:

  • tenths of firefox tabs open some with Microsoft 365 Excel
  • some VMs because I will be installing Debian on the host, but in the office we use some Microsoft software and because, since I install, uninstall, create a lot of mess, I like to be able to go back to old snapshots or format and reinstall Windows without impacting my day to day job.

I'm still undecided about the CPU: AMD 9950x, 9700x or 7950x, but where I' completely blind is the motherboard. What I would like:

  • more than 2 PCIe slots to:
    • install a PCI USB card to pass the whole controller to a VM
    • install an extra NIC
    • I want to be able to install a graphic card in future if needed
  • more than 4 USB-A ports
  • more than 1 USB-C port
  • a well known and reliable brand

Do you have any suggestion even for an SSD (probably 4TB, in the 2-300€ range, maybe even something more) and RAM (64GB)?

Thanks!
