Looking for a buy it for life option for a lantern. Will mostly be used during power outages and only occasionally otherwise. Ideally it would hold a charge well and be bright enough to allow reading/puzzles/games/etc.

Yes, that's the problem. You should probably start by downloading the official raspberry pi imager and choosing a distro from there to install to the SD card.

There are other ways to find images and plenty that aren't available there but that's the easiest way to get up and running. You'll probably want to start with the default raspberry pi os and start experimenting with more customized os's later.

I'd like to be able to find a list of posts I've actually opened do I can go back and find articles and such that I didn't finish reading. I can't find a way to do this so far but if there is a way I'd be happy to learn!
