The legal basis of the agreement was built on the existence of the PCLOB ensuring adequate protection of personal data. With the PCLOB being neutered and inoperable, that basis no longer holds.

The amount of mental gymnastics required to believe that an agreement with the US will prevent them from gaining access to data stored by US companies on EU soil is staggering. And it's repeatedly been shown to be fiction, as US national security laws will always supercede such an agreement.

It's even more silly now that the US has a president that's very clearly opposed to the agreement, and recently made the supervisory authority that's supposed to enforce the agreement (PCLOB) inoperable by suspending appointed members such that there aren't enough of them to make a decision.

It's time we put this fiction to rest and accept that data stored in clouds owned by US companies is available to those companies, and therefore to the US government, and will continue to be so no matter what gets written on a piece of paper.

I do think that with the increasing use of LEO satellites for drone control and the general breakdown of international agreements and institutions we're seeing, the moratorium on weapons in space will not last much longer. Every player will work on anti-satellite systems to deny command-and-control links to the enemy.

The anti-satellite weapons we have today are mostly focused on taking down single satellites, and would not be practical against these mass swarms of LEO satellites. We'll probably see a revival of ideas like EMPs in orbit to knock out large batches of satellites all at once. Obviously such a weapon would be indiscriminate and would take down everything within the blast radius.

Annað sem mér finnst ekki rætt nóg um í pólitíkinni er hversu bundið ríkið er bandarísku skýjarisunum. Mér finnst óþægilegt að hugsa til þess hversu mikinn aðgang USA hefur að gögnum íslendinga. Allar ríkisstofnanir eru í Office 365 eftir að Bjarni gerði samning við MS. Og flestöll kerfi hýst annaðhvort í Azure eða AWS.

Jafnvel þó menn velji að nota EU gagnaver þá hefur móðurfyrirtækið aðgang að gögnunum þar, og ef bandarísk stjórnvöld óska eftir gögnum t.d. með National Security Letter þá munu þau fá þau, óháð hvar þau eru vanalega geymd.

Ríkið ætti að setja reglur um að stofnanir þurfi að hýsa gögn í EU/EES löndum og hjá fyrirtækjum sem eru í meirihlutaeigu aðila í þeim löndum. Rauneign þá, ekki skúffufyrirtækjaleikir. Það mun taka langan tíma að vinda ofan af þessu en því lengur sem við bíðum því erfiðara verður það.

Ferlið er ekki eins smooth, er ennþá að bíða eftir greiðsluleiðbeiningum frá þeim. En ég vil samt frekar versla við þá, og sem bónus eru þeir aðeins ódýrari núna.

Eitt sem mér finnst gera mér erfiðara fyrir er að margar EU netverslanir bjóða ekki upp á sendingar til íslands. Ríkið mætti alveg taka þetta upp innan EES, að beita sér fyrir því að kynna EES löndin betur fyrir verslunum og gera auðvelt fyrir þær að bjóða upp á sendinar til Íslands og innheimta VSK fyrirfram.

Yeah, Icelandic and Faroese are really close, we can almost understand one another. Written faroese I can mostly read. Spoken I can't follow, but I think with a couple of months immersion I could mostly get the hang of it.

FWIW, machine translation for Icelandic is terrible. I beg you to just post in English - everyone here understands English and there is less risk of miscommunication.

I've seen many discussion threads devolve into pointless arguments because one party used google translate, and it just silently inverted the meaning of what was said. The grammar and syntax all looks fine, but the output did not match the meaning of the input.

Sorry for the rant, this is a pet peeve of mine :)
