Lemmy seems to have a very strong voice for pushing people towards Linux.... But I don't hear nearly enough about ditching Google and other mega-corps. I started Degoogling long ago and have been really happy with the result. There are lots of alternatives and there's no reason to stick with Google the way people do. Your description of half-baked shitty products is their hallmark. Their bloody search doesn't even work well anymore and that's what the whole business got launched on.

Lemmy please strongly considering De-googling. It's quite easy for almost all services.

Oldest.

There's a podcast by Malcolm Gladwell where he says data shows the single best predictor of successful college application or success with college sports is your month of birth. Being oldest in the class comes as a huge advantage and is making many American families "red shirt" their child by putting them in school a year later; and this making them the oldest child in the class all the way through.

This just sounds more and more appealing. Count me in.

This community is literally called "no stupid questions". Don't worry about it.

What's the purpose of putting "Nobody:" in memes now? It never used to be in memes. It adds nothing. Am I too old to understand internet culture now?

Wife approval factor

My wife won't use it if she can't see an app for it to click on to start using immediately. Going through browsers is not an option. Not having a dedicated app on the LG TV is not an option. Not being able to find something instantly means instant rejection. She refused Plex, but now sometimes uses it and has learnt to find subtitles, etc by herself.

I don't touch my self hosted apps. If something doesn't behave properly on the first attempt then it gets rejected from our household. It's only for us enthusiast nerds to put up with kanky UI and setup issues for the sake of superior functionality. Normie's won't tolerate it.

no idea if that's true or not, just repeating what i heard someone say

Aren't we all

The issue presented is a complex one. For anyone else stumbling across this, I have an optimal solution after having lived through this: delete your Instagram account. This solution is a net positive for everyone.

Great video, but I signed up to this ideology years ago. I can already see that if I send this to anyone in my life who does algorithm complacency, then they likely won't even get through this video.... Or if they do, then they'll say it is correct and carry on doing exactly what they're doing.

Typical example:

I've told both my wife and mother that I can put whatever movie they want onto Plex. I've put on a lot of great movies already. They don't know how to choose. They would literally rather have Netflix present a handful of shit movies and they pick from that....and then watch it and complain about how shit it was. But this scenario is far more preferable for them.

you don't need to give social advise to a neurotypical person

Supremely disagree.

Here's a podcast episode I've heard today to illustrate the example of just how bad most "neurotypical" can be with simple social interactions:

It is ALWAYS bad advice. "Be yourself" is the most pointless thing to say to anyone. It doesn't help the recipient at all. Same for "be a better person". You could say "be genuine" and that would be slightly more helpful.

From my background in education: under-performers tend to be poor judges of their position, tend to have no idea what good performance looks like or how to get there, and tend to surround themselves with similar under-performers. So someone who is underperforming in a social role (making friends, fitting into their work place, dating, etc) needs a lot more focused and good quality feedback.

"Decapitated woman found in lrish bog" - terrible news.

"is 2000 year-old ritual sacrifice" - oh this is ancient? Yay a new archeological finding.

I previously posted this.

I really like Street Fighter and I like making things.....so both interests have combined and my wife thinks I've got a problrm: https://i.imgur.com/OvFO47j.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/cSUfHDl.jpeg

Just don't ask me my ladder rank.

So I took inspiration from Daigo. I figure more buttons = more ladder points

I previously posted my custom layout keyboard which I use at home. I got fed up of the different layout at work so I made the same thing to have consistency. Really happy with the result. I'm trying to set up macros now to make annoying tasks at work faster.

Been thinking of doing this for over a year and finally got round to it. Found parts. Spent hours soldering, lubricating, stuffing with foam and programming QMK. So happy with the final result. It's a joy to use.

Gateron yellow switches. YMDK PCB, backplate and case. Ali Express keycaps.

It's a budget build and none of this is high end......but it has still worked out really well.

I've really liked hitbox controllers for Street Fighter 6. I've been really happy with how they've turned out and they're a joy to use. If there's interest I can post the build process/instructions/guide.

Also would be good to grow the community if you're interested: !arcadesticks@lemmy.world

Started with a fightstick I bought for Street Fighter 4 many years ago. Now that Street Fighter 6 is out, I've become interested in hitboxes and have started making them myself.

When I first started I bought a fight stick. Now I'm finding it really enjoyable to make hotboxes.
