That sounds really efficient to me!
I don't know if I would classify it as a bad move, but it's definitely disappointing. Something like this should have only been deployed as a last resort. Perhaps it was.
Isn't it illegal to lock privacy behind a paywall?
... It seems like it might not be.

Etcher was a good piece of software. As soon as Balena bought it and stuffed their name in front, things started going south. I wish the weird name and shift to an unintuitive icon were the only things that had happened...
If you missed it, Mozilla outsourced the production of this logo to a professional design firm. The previous logo redesign was crowdsourced, with fans voting on their favorite design. It feels rather metaphorical, doesn't it...
Edit: How did I miss their #1 promise to shift even more into being an Ad Company
While Firefox remains the core of what we do, we also need to take steps to diversify: investing in privacy-respecting advertising...
Kind of ironic that Raffi Krikorian is both
- The new chair of Mozilla.ai, a $30 million project geared towards advancing environmentally unfriendly slop
- The CTO of Emerson Collective, a "philanthropic" corporation that allegedly cares about the environment
Raffi, if you're reading this, the best thing you could do for both Firefox and the environment is to pocket your entire salary, wind down your division (and if you must lay off employees, let them pocket theirs!), and return the remainder of the $30m to Mozilla for development of Firefox.
- To play to your interests: I'm sure Monero has been instrumental in plenty of direct, Israeli money laundering too.
- And if that's not enough, cryptocurrency broadly is beloved by many venture capitalists and private equity ghouls. It doesn't need evangelism, which only benefits its investors
Regarding Matrix: it's like you're applying the "One Drop" rule. To address misinfo in two places:
Amdocs was divested from Israeli private ownership since the 80s, funded by Bell, and headquartered in Missouri for decades before Matrix began development, Matrix's team split off entirely a couple years later, and they're in the UK: they're a descendant of a diaspora company.
We all have different priorities, I guess. You might be okay with aiding American money launderers, but draw the line at anything that might have touched Israel.
(PS: It didn't. Matrixis several degrees of separation from anything Israeli, let alone any government, so you might want to edit that comment.)
It's still kind of bad. You can format bullet points better by having a space between the bullet and the text. Then you don't have to double-space everything.
It's also pretty easy to test changes by using the Preview buttons available in most client, as far as I've seen
