Pretty sure everyone understood that invading Poland would cause the allies to go to war with Germany.

I think that a lot of stem people have completely lost the plot with the hype around AI as well. Just going to AI conferences to circle jerk about how important their work is has made them genuinely think that them accidentally creating sky net is the greatest threat to humanity.

It is kind of hilarious how the Silicon Valley dweebs got their lunch eaten by people who treated LLMs as an LLM instead of thinking that they're going to create god.

Maybe this will get all the "We are creating Skynet" drama to die down a bit.

The allies would likely be slightly less friendly towards the nazis if they didn’t see them as a cudgel against the USSR.

I think this is one of the issues of people learning a word and knowing that it is bad without understanding why. Yes, America bad, but not simply because it is America. Also add an inflated sense of self-importance.

There is a version Antideutsch in every western society.

Think "Millenial" sitcoms start properly around That 70s Show or Scrubs at earliest.

In some ways it portrays the fecklessness of liberal civility politics. Instead of freeing the slaves they buy only the child slave and leave his mother to die in slavery. Institutions are crumbling from inside and out and it is easily kicked down at the right kind of push in a crisis.

I don't understand how you can watch the prequels and come away thinking that the Jedi are enlightened. In the first trilogy the only real exposure to Jedi was Yoda and Obi wan teaching Luke, but when you see how that works out in practice it is a farce.

When they adapt older stories there was often a monarch involved. Then they start using the adaptations as inspiration for what they make next. Like how sci fi often has space monarchs as it spun out from pulp fantasy.

Also that absolute monarchy is a pretty simple system to wrangle for storytelling, a lot harder to keep a limited scope in a parliamentary system for example.

It is amazing how Israel buckles under any amount of pressure after over a year of being told that Israel could continue on their own and the president couldn't do anything to change it.

Very informative to know that hundreds of thousands are dead because the democrats simply refused to do anything to stop it other than briefing the press about how sad they are about it.

While neither the LACFD or the LAFD have mentioned equipment shortages hampering their efforts fighting the January 2025 wildfire outbreak, the LACFD did say that the combined fire departments across the Los Angeles area lacked the personnel necessary to quickly suppress this week’s major wildfires.

“There are not enough firefighters in L.A. County to address four separate fires of this magnitude,” Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said during a Jan. 8 press conference. “The L.A. County Fire Department was prepared for one or two major brush fires, but not four, especially given these sustained winds and low humidities.”

There is currently a fundraising campaign to help the LAFD acquire equipment, but that equipment is not the same type of equipment as what the LACFD said it donated to Ukraine. The campaign seeks to raise money for emergency personal fire shelters, hydration backpacks and wildland brush tools.

Excerpt from the article linked. This seems like a non-story pushed by reactionaries. Not sure that extra hoses and nozzles would have done a lot without extra fire engines to go with them.
