The other way round isn't great either, my friend.
Apocalypteroid
Performance art = Painful fart
I expect the problem is that, when you get that rich, people stop caring about you, they start caring about your money. A string of women who just smash a kid out for him then fuck off. Kids who don't seem to want anything to do with him. Does he have anyone he actually considers a true friend? Probably not. He's just surrounded by bootlickers and yes men, and deep down he knows it. He's probably deeply lonely and paranoid.
Not that I care. He's also a cunt.
Oh, I haven't. That's why I'm here instead of Reddit.
Promote all bishops to pope and shit together in woods.
Sir, your prose is sublime.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this movie. It was incoherent, with far too many ideas and political messages trying to be crammed into it's run time.
It would have been better if Mark Ruffalo's character was either just a politician or just a religious cult leader, although, on reflection, maybe this was commentary on Trump's seemingly cult like following? Even if it was it didn't work well in this movie.
Toni Collete was criminally wasted, her character more or less pointless other than to provide some, initially amusing but quickly tiring comic relief with her obsession with sauces.
Pattinson put in a good performance as the various Mickeys but none of them were particularly likeable. The exception being M18, who was supposed to be a vicious psychopath, but came across as the only one in the entire film who actually responded anywhere near reasonably to the situations he faced and ultimately proved to be the hero of the piece by offing the main protagonist, sacrificing himself in the process.
Ultimately, I feel that Mickey 17's most serious flaw is that it was boring. I felt like there was no sense of peril, despite the situation, minor issues seemed to crop up and then be forgotten about or solved without any real hardship. Several of the twists and turns went nowhere or seemed to happen for no reason (Mickey's temptation with Gemma for example). At no point did you think, "they might all die", and it was all just a bit of a lark.
In summary, strong performances from all the leads (Ruffulo, Collete, Pattinson and Ackie) and strong visual design couldn't save this film from being incoherent, unfunny and boring.
5/10
As a sci-fi nerd, film buff and leftist, this movie was pretty much made for me, but I only found out about it about 2 days before it was released. Seems to me that they didn't push it at all. I only saw it because a friend of mine had a spare ticket.
Unfortunately, we found the movie boring, incoherent and, for the most part, unfunny. I really loved parasite so was very disappointed that this missed the mark so badly.
As a brit I have found it fascinating how American and British politics seem to mirror each other. This is exactly the same argument that was levelled against Brexit. The stats the TV showed was 51% vs 49% in favour of Brexit but only 60% of the country voted and with this teeny tiny majority of voters the Conservatives enacted a massive constitutional change and causes absolute havoc which we are still paying for today.
We've since voted out the party that caused it but it landed us with an ineffective centrist Labour party who are continuing the mistakes of the past and not appealing to the left in the slightest (sound familiar?). This government still has 4 more years left in power but unless they change tack then I am very worried that we will have a extreme right version of the Conservatives in power next election.
The problem is the First Past The Post voting system. It's not true democracy. It's weighted to the right. Two parties, both in the pocket of big business. One who says "Oh, we'd love to help all you poors but it's really not possible to increase taxes on the rich and invest in our country", and the other who says "you'll be poor but at least you're not gonna get deported or persecuted like those gay and brown people".
TLDR: Both the US and the UK need urgent electoral reform. Write to your representative. Make it an issue. Do not stop until it is a number one priority for these ghouls or they will keep fucking us.
Thank you for attending my Ted talk. Goodnight.
