I don't see the problem with this, as long as they fork it and cut off dependance from Google.

The problem is that web browsers have become a mono culture. I lived through IE6 putting netscape out of business, and then never updating IE6. It was not a fun time for 10 years until Firefox came along. We need more diversity in browser engines.
