Greetings. I recently was given an unexpected bonus by my boss and was going to use this opportunity to upgrade my gaming rig. And by upgrade, I mean build an all new tower. For context, I originally built my current machine back in 2012. I upgraded the GPU around 2016 and had to replace the motherboard in 2022 or something. Anyway, my current system is running an AMD FX 6100 CPU and an old and a Radeon R9 390, which much to my frustration, AMD abandoned and stopped releasing updated drivers for back in 2022. So yeah, it’s long in the tooth but has been holding its own until very recently. I’m starting to find some games with weird rendering issues, extremely low frame rates even at very low resolutions and FSR or that won’t even launch at all and just tell me that “no compatible graphics device was found.”
My goal is to build another machine that will last me 10+ years, play pretty much any game flawlessly at 1080 with max settings and let me play most games at 1440 with maybe some tweaks to the settings. The link to my parts list is below. I feel like I am splurging on the GPU but I also feel like the price difference between this and GPU with less speeds and VRAM isn’t that significant and I should go for the brand new, more future proof GPU.
I also considered saving myself a weekend of labor and just buying a pre-built but for the same price range you get a machine that’s got parts that already two or three years old. I was initially hesitant to spend so much. After some research I’m warming up it but if anyone can recommend any parts to swap out that might shave a two or three hundred bucks off while offering similar performance and future proofing, I’m open to suggestions. If saving a couple hundred bucks means significantly less performance and parts that are already on their way to being outdated, then I’m sticking with what I have.
