We had the Six Day War in 1967, we had the Nineteen Day War (Yom Kippur) in 1973, and now we've had the Twelve Day War. I wonder how many more very short wars will plague the region until Palestine is freed?

However, moving on from Western Asia from a little while, we have some interesting news from Chile - the former labor minister and communist, Jeannette Jara, has won the primary election for the left-wing bloc in a landslide (~60% of the vote), as the current President, Gabriel Boric, is term-limited. Her achievements include a minimum wage increase and a reduction of the work week to 40 hours.

In November, Jara will face down the contenders from other parties, including José Antonio Kast, who is analogous to Brazil's Bolsonaro. Unfortunately, Jara is now the lead figure of a party that has been taking quite a few Ls under Boric's leadership. Ostensibly a Democratic Socialist, he ruled as - you guessed it - a neoliberal, bending the knee to the US and EU. He not only failed to overthrow the Pinochet-era constitution, he actually allowed the right-wing to turn the proposed new constitution into something worse, and had to settle for campaigning against the new one and keeping the old one. And he had very little solidarity with other left-leaning leaders on the continent, like Maduro, Lula, Petro, or Castillo.

With this in mind, I cannot help but look at Argentina's very recent history and feel a little dread - but if anybody can save Chile at this point, it can only be a communist.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Beyond revealing their cowardice, the pose is just so awkward:

IOF soldiers are now taking their official photos with their backs turned. [It's closer to having their left shoulder face the camera but turning their head right so we can't see their face profiles.] Because they know. We know. They will be held accountable.

  1. they realized the world doesn't defend them anymore.
  2. they know they're not invincible.

They didn't realize, a bunch of influencers went to Israel and told them that they should no longer take pictures, like that guy Destiny. He said "have fun, but don't post pictures".

Hamas' response to the ceasefire proposal, reported by most major news websites:

Hamas wrote on its official website: "The Hamas movement has completed its internal consultations as well as discussions with Palestinian factions and forces regarding the latest proposal by the mediators to halt the aggression against our people in Gaza.

"The movement has delivered its response to the brotherly mediators, which was characterized by a positive spirit. Hamas is fully prepared, with all seriousness, to immediately enter a new round of negotiations on the mechanism for implementing this framework," the statement said.

Source article

Looks like the ceasefire could happen, depending on how negotiations go, potential conditions, etc. Hamas likely wants guarantees that Israel will not be able to restart the genocide and war unilaterally, and that the UN led aid mechanism will be reinstated.

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 28 points 1 day ago

Dont think it'll materialise at all. The Iran war is seen as a stalemate at best to most Israelis, and the govt desperate to avoid that frustration with the war combining with the frustration over the continued refusal to negotiate with Hamas.

Netanyahu is making the smart choice: placing himself into negotiations that, even if a farce, put opposition parties in a position where they dont want to be seen as "wrecking" negotiations. His government can continue simply endlessly flip between truces and war with its half a dozen enemies to postpone any movement to topple it.

Trump, again, is the key. Eden Alexander was Hamas' last bargaining chip and all that became of him was the flooding of Gaza with murderous Nazi bastards; Each and every one of them eager to use the food they brought in their armoured trucks to construct elaborate squid-games-style concentration camps.

Unless Trump is seriously willing to dump the current Israeli regime for little personal (let alone national) benefit, the genocide will continue, even if its perpetrators must endure a gruelling moment of respite from vaporising children.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 51 points 1 day ago

and that the UN led aid mechanism will be reinstated.

UNRWA needs to be reinstated incredibly badly. The existing mechanism is clearly just a method of mass murder.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 37 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Does anyone have any faith at all Pissreal will stay the course or honor the ceasefire?

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

I think we need to have a term "Israeli Ceasefire". An Israeli Ceasefire is when the more powerful side is still allowed to fire and attack as much as they want, but if the less powerful side fights back at all, the ceasefire is considered broken.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I feel like it all depends on Iran, really, unless Ansarallah is capable of doing another blockade. I guess that's also plausible.

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If only Iran or other brotherly nation could offer a true guarantee of security. The US does not take kindly to muslim nations trying to leverage peace deals that offer respite for Palestine; just look how well that went for Saddam in Kuwait.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Let me spell it out more concretely: if Iran doesn't test a nuke in the near future, Israel will finish the job.

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago

Absolutely. Without the deterrent a nuclear weapon can provide, the US would rather re-engage in bombing any and all regional governments into submission than allow any of them to formally threaten Israel's security.

Over thirty kids at summer camp got swept away and killed by flooding in Texas today because early warning systems have been stripped bare here.

As the weather gets worse and worse due to climate change we are actually scaling back preparation efforts for ideological reasons.

I hate this suicide cult that calls itself a political party. I’m so tired of it all.

There are like two people who still know this word and are also antisemitic and both are/were US presidents

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The surprising bit is that he can actually remember something he said. Maybe unburdening him of the stress of being president has allowed a tiny bit of rebound from the dementia.

This is legitimately the first time I've come across the word "shylocks"

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 31 points 1 day ago

Gotta brush up on your old timey racism. It's making a comeback.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago (5 children)

I remember it from Shakespeare in school. Do kids in English language schools still do that these days, Macbeth, Othello, the Merchant of Venice, etc? I can't remember which Shakespeare play Shylocks was from, I remember he was a Jewish money lender, so I guess that's where the anti Semitic stuff comes from.

[–] carpoftruth@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's merchant of Venice. The movie version with al Pacino is excellent. Pacino plays shylock.

And yes it's a complex play with respect to antisemitism. At the simplest level, it is about a vengeful Jewish merchant who wants to claim his pound of flesh for a debt owed, killing the (Christian) debtor, and how Christians by-your-logic the jew out of his claim, forcing him to convert, taking his daughter and his wealth. There are lots of tropes of shylock the hand rubbing Jewish money lender stereotype who charges exorbitant interest of Christians. It was written in a deeply antisemitic country/time/place and was surely put on in many places with shylock explicitly as the antagonist and villain. The nazis loved it.

It's also canonically sympathetic to shylock and the Jewish people - shylock is motivated by commitment to the law and a sense of loyalty to oneself. He's a flawed character, hypocritical in his own way, but his flaws are a reflection of a lifetime of experiencing antisemitism, instances of which are illustrated in the play (Antonio has been screwing with shylock's business because he's a jew, shylock's daughter Jessica runs away with/is absconded by a shady Christian, and ultimately shylock is forced through lawfare to convert under penalty of death and will his entire estate to the same shady Christian). The famous monologue "if you prick us, do we not bleed" is explicitly about how Jews are no less human than Christians (nazi productions of merchant of venice cut this speech apparently). Also, Antonio and bassiano, the guys who borrow the money from shylock in the first place, are idiot fuck boy antisemites who 100% have it coming. The trial at the end of the show is clearly a kangaroo court farce.

There's also a modern play called shylock that explores these themes in a meta way. In that show, an actor is playing shylock in a production of merchant of venice that is being shut down because of charges of antisemitism. The actor playing shylock is a Jewish guy who talks about how he chose to portray shylock as a villain and thus earns the opprobium of Jewish theatre critics for being a race traitor. The theme of this metaplay is that art should be challenging and that you, the baby brained audience, should read and watch film/plays with a critical eye even if it hurts your feelings.

trump-drenched : "We're going to give them responsibility for these people and we're going to have a registration system. They can be here illegally, pay taxes. They won't gain citizenship and the farmers need them to work."

Trump wants to give farmers the power to decide who can stay in the US. At a press conference in Des Moines, Trump said that the farmer can be a guarantor for the illegal immigrant and that his responsibility as an owner will dictate whether the worker can stay without being a citizen. For experts, this is a step towards serfdom: workers without rights, kept for economic gain. Trump calls it a practical solution, but it looks more like a 21st century fiefdom.

So...pretty much exactly as it's been since at least Obama, and maybe going back as far as Clinton. The whole point of criminalizing immigration is for the corpos to be able to use deportation as a stick. They 100% already do, calling ICE to lay people off, and violating labor rights with the literal terrorism of border militarization as the repressive force that prevents resistance. Whole documentaries have been made about this as a very real, existing phenomenon.

But with like +800% more police funding, of course.

They can be here illegally

Making it legal to be there illegally lmao

If you're a ~~slaver~~ farm owner or whatever in the US, then you already got migrants doing the back breaking work for shit pay with the threat of deportation hanging over their head, right? That seriously wasn't enough for these people.

I don't know what to say that wouldn't be illegal-to-say

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Western capitalism needs an exploitable underclass of workers in order to preserve itself. Ive been wondering how Trump was going to deal with this contradictiom sharpening. This is actually the only hope I have of US not going full-on nazi death camps because the immigrant proletariat is more essential for capital to function unlike the jews/communists/romani/trans/queer in Nazi Germany.

I remember the Chapo crew doing a reading series from some liberal professor advocating for exactly this. Like 8 years later and it is already happening.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

yeah it was this Eric Posner article in Politico iirc

Editor’s note: This article, and particularly its original headline (“What If You Could Get Your Own Immigrant?”), was offensive to many readers. We changed the headline on Tuesday night to better reflect the authors’ intent, and asked them to respond to the criticism, but they declined. POLITICO Magazine has always been a platform for a wide range of views, and we do not endorse the opinions expressed in any article we publish.
