I know there is the whole "no ethical consumption" but at what point do you say "too far"?

Ended a friendship over them working for a defense contractor (think image of a missile as their website's header).

Even then I could excuse it if they were able to argue their reasoning, but they wouldn't admit that the work they do is terrible. I know another guy who works in the industry and he basically said he doesn't do jack shit and being a leech is better than someone doing work, but this other person didn't defend their position at all.

Completely shut down the discussion. Even though they're an Arab, they still didn't want to face the fact that their work is quite literally raining bombs on their extended family.

I told him that he is a zionist due to his work propping up the zionist entity and that's what ultimately lead to the collapse of the friendship. I still stand by what I said though.

I worked A LOT of different jobs in my life. Grew up dirt poor in a rich country, dropped out of school and clawed my way up.

Started as a carpenters help, then electrical work, then apprenticeship in a cruel industry, long before I understood the system.

Long story short, I went employer and tried to do ethically organized with fair shares etc but got coopted by someone. The system is cutthroat if you go that route.

Then went back to self employed but I'm trying to build a coop for quite some time. Problem is people i met so far in the business I'm in are too comfy to take responsibility, at least where I live currently.

I would go back to an office if I had to but I would absolutely not help exploit people anymore.

I do. Ultimately you are a worker like everyone else. There seems to be this (deliberate) split between blue collar workers and office workers but ultimately we are on the same side of the struggle.

'No ethical consumption under capitalism' and all but as a worker you simply cannot have an overview of what is happening throughout the supply chain all the time. That's the issue with non worker owned businesses: as a worker you have no control over the way of working. You could try to organise yourself together with your coworkers so that you can leverage more control of the workplace, of course. But that is a hard thing to do for many people in our current system. I think trying to organise your workplace is a good start though.

I work an office job in what I'd say is an indefensible industry and I fucking hate it and my ghoulish coworkers. No chance organizing this workplace, class consciousness is completely absent and people are too busy enjoying their treats to care about anything else or see society collapsing around them. Even if they were to organize, they'd do it to gain a bigger share of the imperial pie, not due to any sort of activism.

More than working in a deeply unethical job, I think the reason to avoid these jobs is because you can't effect any positive change here, there's too much resistance, these will likely be the last holdouts of capitalism when the tide finally turns left in the West. Go somewhere else where you can organize a workplace and find people who are more receptive to Marxist thought.
