In Chinese usage, the cuckold (or wittol) is said to be "戴綠帽子" dài lǜmàozi, translated into English as 'wearing the green hat'. The term is an allusion to the sumptuary laws used from the 13th to the 18th centuries that required males in households with prostitutes to wrap their heads in a green scarf (or later a hat).

It’s red hats in the USA

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

In 2007 I went to a hockey game. They gave away a hat. It says "Lake Erie Monsters".

Now, today the team has been renamed. It's now the Cleveland Monsters.

Point is, it's a red hat, with white text, and I haven't been able to wear it since 2016 despite having nothing to do with trump or politics.

I just like hockey. And my hat is RUINED!!!

Its just like when I was a kid, and I was like "WOW! CHARLIE CHAPLIN!!! I'M GOING TO GROW A MUSTACHE JUST LIKE YOU WHEN I GROW UP!!!"

Yeah.....about that.....

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’ve been a 49ers fan for more than 30 years, thanks to these assholes now a white guy in a red hat is immediately suspect. I tend to wear the white one with red accents more often just so folks don’t get the wrong idea.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ohhhhhhh, please nobody make blue or orange hats bad.

I mean, orange is ALREADY a bad hat to wear, but it's not political. It's just the Browns are.....just so....so bad.....for so very long.

But at least it's not assosiated with trump!

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Wouldn't it make perfect sense to associate it with Trump? He's orange, his diaper's brown, he's got the Browns color scheme and losing record down, he's grungy but not in a good way (sorry Cleveland, never actually been, love you tho Drew Carey), nobody likes him, etc...?

I was just trying to be a better person when I joined the buddhist Kentucky Karma Klub and we got our matching tattoos, but FML, I guess.

Poor Luigi...

...although on second thought maybe it's a legit kink for him. Some people love being the cuckold. Not meaning to kinkshame Luigi either.

As someone who saw the Legend of Zelda cartoon... There's a lot to unpack here. It might explain some things.

[–] Anomalocaris@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago

God, why did they make him like that in the cartoon

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

So, uh....your wife. Is she looking for a bull?

[–] tal@lemmy.today 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Sounds politically-awkward.

[–] Anomalocaris@lemm.ee 7 points 1 week ago

you don't want their wives to get lonely?

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

that's obviously not green, that's uhhh, hmm..
seaweed! seaweed coloured, it's a shade of black actually.

[–] digger@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago

In church heraldry, Bishops and Archbishops use use a green hat. Up until the last decade, the Chinese Bishops and Archbishops used other colors for this very reason.

[–] Apeman42@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

[–] PoastRotato@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (1 children)

[–] Anomalocaris@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

please tell me it's medieval England smut, have to find a rule 34 historian

[–] Remorhaz@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Gonna give you the “wellll ackshually” here:

The original Robin Hood wore red, his hood the color of a robin, hence the name

It’s only since the Disney version everyone slaps him in green

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

"I'm going to hide in the forest and attack the Sheriff's people. Now what should I wear?" Spots red hood."Perfect!"

spoilerNow, granted, robins aren't really red, more a reddish brown that would absolutely blend into the trees, not unlike the birds.

Do Chinese snicker amongst themselves when they see a tourist wearing a green hat? I know I would

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 13 points 1 week ago

When I was in Japanese language school, this actually came up amongst the Chinese students in the group as it was an example in the textbook or something. Laughter was had and then they explained to the rest of us later.

[–] BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago
