trade's thankfully more automated now. lots of commodities that used to be overabundant and unused by the population's now being used and is actually forcing you to produce them i.e fruit, meat, etc. ports now make a commodity thats used in trade zones so ports and trade zones can actually achieve profitability and commodification instead of being state-ran and/or subsidized buildings. colonization now costs like 100k for initial settlement and in overseas colonies will automatically build a port for you. war fighting now feels more and less buggy; armies no longer randomly disappear or transport back to hq when their front collapses, frontlines now can be composed of multiple front line zones if they're at least one province apart, it seems like the supply levels of your armies are not just now influinced by how many convoy ships you have for overseas expeditions but also by the amount of commodities necessary to arm them. Theres now specialty items that companies generate when at a certain prosperity level and they're upgraded versions of a normal commodity of the industry the company's in charge of and they also can grant minor bonuses from their consumption in both civil and military circumstances. armies sometimes get stuck when a war ends for some reason.

So I cant vouch for it myself since I havent played it yet but the reception has been stellar. General opinion seems this is the best update since the game released. There are still bugs etc but the actual new systems are excellent and exactly what the doctor ordered.

I wanna play the game in another 1-2 weeks but I have to admit I have no idea how it currently plays. Last time I knew how how to play Vicky 3 was back in like 1.4 and we are now on 1.9

Also line goes up.

I've tried and failed at least half a dozen times to get past the year 1856 without completely imploding my economy. I have never once been successful.

Is this patch extensive enough that it would be worth me trying again? Or am I likely to just bankrupt my own ass once again?

gotta be cash positive :3 play sweden or bolivia, they are relatively free from other people bullshit

but don't think it fixes bankrupting, it's about diplomacy and trade mainly

Yeah I do really well for the first twenty years and then my economy just implodes and I can never figure out why. I normally play as Venezuela. Maybe I'll give Bolivia a go.

I'm by no means a Vicky 3 expert, but most times I've found my economy exploding like that was usually due to the same few common issues:

  1. My construction sector can't afford the switch to new materials,
  2. I changed the production for certain sectors all at the same time (e.g. switching to nitrate for farms, dynamite for mining all at once)
  3. A loyal interest group just became disloyal, and I lost their bonus.
  4. I was cut off from a trade group/sphere/whatever they're called that I was relying on.

The way I've found to help combat this is by only ever tweaking the individual buildings one at a time at the state level, and never switching all at once. I also make ample use of subsidies to prop up basic industry such as forestry so that I can handle my own basic necessities. Finally, don't be afraid of switching back to more basic modes in your buildings if they can't get what they need. The important mid-game goal is to have a completely self-sufficient steelmaking process and to start churning out both engines and steel-frame buildings. As for diplomacy and warfare... I have no clue. I only ever play Vicky 3 like it's a city builder lol.

Fair warning: I have no real clue how to progress or play optimally. The best I can manage with my limited knowledge of the game is to have my peasants well-fed and happy while still having a positive economy

you can use high taxes, or sporadically stop building yourself, to let porkies build stuff (gotta have porkies tho), interventionism/agrarianism is a must have.

*also sokoto, best korea and mexico are interesting to play (in ascending order of difficulty), sokoto gets invaded like once or twice by france over 100 years, and is relatively well insulated to defend, korea has qing to deal with bullshit (but you have to pay tribute for long ass time), and mexico is kinda well positioned to defend and make alliances against great satan.

damn and i just started another stellaris run (last one was too big of a galaxy, my new PC isn't adequate)

sounds like trade is way better now and that was always the most annoying part. may play next unless i'm tired of map games

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

oof, i've had that problem on previous copy during war, i think i've spent like 3 hours loading different saves to ship armies in different configurations around lmao

I'm really enjoying it so far. Seems like it added a lot of depth and made the economy/trade feel more alive. I have a few hundred hours played and every update has brought improvements.
