Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

It feels less in my control, and at least tells me what I say.

People who say data are wrong, period. It's data and always will be.

[–] SonicBlue03@sh.itjust.works 17 points 4 weeks ago

I agree. I've always said this.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

But is it pronounced "database" or "database"?

[–] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 11 points 4 weeks ago

Database, obviously?

[–] slippyferret@lemmy.blahaj.zone 49 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Great. Now I’m unsure of how to pronounce database as well.

[–] RvTV95XBeo@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 weeks ago

Easy fix, just say datum five times fast

Uhhhhhh......that guy should see a doctor. His blood count is very low.

[–] aaaa@lemmy.world 21 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

How many bloods should a healthy man have?

[–] TheRedSpade@lemmy.world 12 points 4 weeks ago

I don't know the correct answer, but I think some would be a good start.

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 15 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I definitely say both depending on the sentence and how it feels coming off the tongue. I also alternate between the and thee. No idea why, but it happens organically.

[–] Reyali@lemm.ee 8 points 4 weeks ago

Route as well. Depends largely on if I’m talking about routing Internet traffic or Route 66, though.

You say data, and I say data. Let's call the whole thing off.

It’s like when people pronounce mana like mana, it’s very annoying.

[–] stickyShift@midwest.social 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Pronounce like what? Mana-goose? Or Mana-in-the-middle?

[–] topherclay@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

🎵life is unfaiiir. 🎶

[–] LordGimp@lemm.ee 1 points 4 weeks ago

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 weeks ago

[–] algorithmae@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I had a comp sci teacher pronounce "data" and "database" differently. Drove me up a wall. I don't even care which way you say it, just make it the same ffs

[–] LaoisheFu@lemmy.world 12 points 4 weeks ago

No he was right; it's data and database. 100%

[–] JTskulk@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

Bongers will say "dodderbase" unironically though.

[–] Alloi@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

[–] josefo@leminal.space 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

I think you mean datumbase

[–] FireIced@lemmy.super.ynh.fr 3 points 4 weeks ago

The thing is I have multiple ways of saying database as well 😂

Same problem

Listen, data is singular, and data is plural.

Data goes into a database. It's comprised of individual components of data.

You know it's true because you read this effortlessly.

I assume OP intended to force daytuh base, but I hear dada base fairly often. I don't know if it's more regional or more field related

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

I say it either way depending on how I feel at that moment, because people around me use different pronunciations so they all sound fine.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Instructions unclear, day-tay-boss

[–] not_woody_shaw@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

There's no y in data or database. The only source of confusion is that Star Trek character weirdly dipthong-ing his name.

Don't caall meee daughta

-the database probably

[–] Trex202@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

The only difference between daughta and daughter is the last letters

[–] DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 weeks ago
