Shout out to fans that never break even though you user them for years

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 23 points 3 weeks ago

I feel like i must surely need to oil them or do maintenance, but I never have and yet they function.

[–] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 weeks ago

It's actually a lot more intensive to be turning the fan on and off, so keeping it running is just good maintenance

Hunter Original for the win... Had mine for 22 years, my Mom has my grandmother's of 71 years, both still working

My wife needs one of those. We've had multiple fans die on us, and then the replacement always makes a slightly different drone which drives her nuts until she's used to it

[–] TwoBeeSan@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago

The various spellings of vidya always get a nose exhale laugh.

The best part is this is the relaxation zen.

So it’s a thing huh? Every night I play a video game while watching a tv show and listening to a podcast

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you able to actually consume the material? Can you follow along all three?

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, though it depends on the material. I don’t watch shows I have never seen, I tend to rewatch stuff a lot. Also I tend to drop the podcast if the game im playing calls for it, currently I’m playing Alan wake 2 so I like to be more focused while playing a game like that.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You have the sound on for all three normally or is it like, audio from podcast, video from show on second monitor, then main focus is game? I can't imagine the cacophony otherwise.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

I have audio on all 3 to varying degrees depending on what I am focusing on most at that time. Some games you have to make the primary audio, but more casual games you don’t. but recently I’ve been watching old 80s and 90s wrestling so you don’t need that on full blast. I retain everything on the pods i listen to and it’s the only way I can put in gaming hours

I have the TV on and something on my phone when I play a game. Is it ADHD or just brain rot?

😆 k, gotcha 👍 It's just comfort noise then?

[–] Chocrates@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (7 children)

No clue. I guess I just like background noise

Found out I was within the last year. Explained a lot about my childhood, and adulthood for that matter. I slipped through the cracks for so long because I was never 'hyperactive'.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 7 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Was it helpful? I've got a nagging suspicion on some stuff myself, but it's hard to justify the cost with "do I actually gain anything by formally knowing".

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Knowing was slightly helpful, in a "Well, now at least I know what's lacking and that it's not laziness, but focus."

On the other hand, getting medicated has been... I hesitate to say explicitly life-changing, because at this point in my life it's not really changing anything essential about how I live my life... but it has greatly improved my quality of life. Little things, being able to tackle everyday chores without massive executive dysfunction, or being able to focus on tasks for longer. And my sleep is actually restful now. That's fantastic too.

And the lack of misophonia when I'm medicated is heavenly. Never knew what it was like to not despise every little irregular sound around me. They're still bothersome, but not to the point where I want to bash my skull in against the edge of a table after hearing people indistinctly chattering for more than ten minutes.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

misophonia can go away on adhd meds? i think it's time i stopped procrastinating on getting those

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It was astounding and unexpected. I'm still not the biggest fan of irregular sounds, but not having to refocus on them every time they happen is amazing.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

yeah man i'd give a lot for them to just cause me annoyance, instead of the usual "i want to hit something, run, and then cry"

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 5 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks for sharing, I'll have to consider that benefit.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

knowing has helped my mental health a lot. i'm slowly unlearning constantly blaming myself for being messy or not doing things like "a normal person". adhd is a disability, and it does make life harder, just knowing that helps a little with the guilt

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I might be in the same boat. I have my evaluation scheduled later this month

[–] biggerbogboy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Did you get a diagnosis for it yet? I'm pretty sure I have ADHD but I'm still waiting on one.

Is it important to get one asap or does it not matter how long it takes?

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 weeks ago

I could never do that

(I have audio sensitivities)

[–] ZeffSyde@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

I feel bad because when I game watch videos on another screen while the game is muted on the other.

Hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars wasted on voice acting and sound design. Most of the stuff I play isn't immersive, though, more narrative driven/puzzle based.

The whirr of a fan is regular and unchanging, which helps drown out irregular noises. Irregular noises are hell.

[–] killeronthecorner@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

ADHD havers 🤝 Tinnitus sufferers

[–] CreatingMachines@fedia.io 8 points 3 weeks ago

hey wait a minute

We have pretty bad thunder storms around where I live, so my fans get turned off every now and then. Since two of them have digital switches I have to turn them back on once the power is back on

[–] catharso@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

there must be a way to "boot" those on "power on" 🤔

i hate that about my air-purifier. i wish it had an old-school manual switch and not those fucking modern touch buttons.

[–] ThatGuyNamedZeus@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

3 reasons why I need the fans running all the time

  1. keep the air moving, also two of the fans 1 in the bedroom and 1 in the "computer room" are fans with filters on them to keep the air cleaner during wildfire season.
  2. I have a huge Dewalt fan pointed the specially made cabinet I keep my PC and server in that keeps the air moving through the cabinet (that's the fan with the analog switch, a twisty switch. I even had my boddy weld together some aluminum sheets together to make sure all the air that big fan moves goes into that cabinet and then out the top for maximum heat dissipation...but there's some computer fans on top pulling air up and out that continue to run even when the power goes out and my two bigass UPS power supplies have to do their thing
  3. I'm hearing impaired and my ears ring really loud without the fans running.
[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I'll watch 4 or more videos that I'll jump between tabs of on my PC, but I'll only have one playing at a time. Watch one for like 5 minutes, attentions lulls, switch to another. Later, the attention for one of the others increases, so I'll jump back to it.

It's like...staggered consumption. My attention is weird.

[–] proton_lynx@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

My girlfriend complains when I turn on the fan when we go to sleep. Can't sleep without it

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

The craziest shit about getting on an SNRI as opposed to an amphetamine based med was how quiet my space is compared to before.

[–] Goltbrook@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

Just reached for the fan remote while seeing this.

I just like to feel the wind in my hair.
