Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

The Sentinelese have been too much on the defensive. I hope they kill a social media influencer or missionary in a completely offensive operation.

Uncritical support for the upcoming Sentinelese invasion of Arizona. May their arrows strike down the foul influencer menace inshallah

They really cant let natives alone. Sentinelese already suffered extensive population loss and are vulnerable to disease. Also why a soda lol

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Also why a soda lol

The gods of high fructose corn syrup demand more sacrifices.

Apparently it was a diet soda but still, those poor indigenous people gonna get diarrhea

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I assume it was to show them a product from the outside world. Not sure if the Sentinelese people would know or figure out how to open the can though.

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Are you implying that they'd be so dumb they couldn't, given some time to figure it out, actuate a simple lever at the top of the can?

[–] Sandouq_Dyatha@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I gave my grandmother a soda can once and she was unable to open it and my mom doesn't know what is an energy drink, it's not dumbness, it's just that you're familiar with the object it becomes so normal to you, I'm betting most westerners wouldn't be able to figure out most things if they walked into my kitchen even though to me these are very simple objects.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I would imagine you would have a hard time figuring out what a can of soda is and what it is for if you have never seen one before. It would just be a mystery cylinder with bright colors on it.

I think they would figure out that it's a drinking vessel pretty quick. It's not much different from a coconut...

If they didn't pull the tab they probably have some sharp tools to cut it open.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

they have mental knives and other after they scavenged a beachweark small boat and had an aluminum age

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Bright colored mystery cylinder that sloshes when shaked.

They've seen coconuts. They've seen outsiders and obviously know were crafters because those outsiders wear strange intricate textiles and have vessels upon which they may reach the shore.

It isn't a far stretch to assume this is some kind of strange crafted container. Break it open or figure out the lever on top through investigation.

The sweet smelling liquid inside should indicate it is drinkable.

To be fair those soda tabs are sometimes a real pain in the ass to get my finger under even as a soda-familiar westerner

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Like you can literally break it open with a rock. Also people invented vessels like very early and if you know what a coconut is and that it holds liquids, then a soda can shouldnt be that difficult.

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

That's a pretty loaded question. I don't think not being able to open a pull tab can without outside instruction makes you dumb. I say that because I'm extrapolating my own assumptions about myself, ie that I might not be able to figure out how to properly open a pull tab drink can without being told. If that makes them dumb, then I'm dumb too.

They've had some contact with the outside world, a ship ran around near them once and they salvaged some stuff from it. Also there's been a few recent attempts by anthropologists and indigenous activist groups to establish more lasting contact with them, I think they just came near shore in boats, waved to them, and they sent some guys out who made signals indicated they just wanted them to leave. They only seem to attack people if you go on shore.

Just the other month, last year sometime I believe some youtube jerkoffs went to a remote tribe and tried to get them hooked on vaping and alcohol. Honestly wish these tribes would just kill whomever tries to fuck with them and be well within their rights to do so.

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 25 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Alcohol literally causes the death of numerous native cultures around the world and history. The Onge people almost got wiped out because they drank a shipwrecked methanol canister believing it was ethanol. Also it was used as an colonial weapon.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 34 points 2 weeks ago

Why? So he can parade them on video for a bunch of racist westerners? Fuck off

[–] Future_Honkey@hexbear.net 33 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

This is his second time going too, according to the story. He left a soda and a coconut. I'm tryin ta understand the mentality behind this... Its the second trip that's got me flummoxed, i can't just write it off as drive we all share to do what's not allowed? Why is this cat fixated on this island?

[–] eyyImwalkin@hexbear.net 36 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

He left a soda and a coconut

leaving them a coconut is like going up to a random white person and leaving a jar of mayo on their doorstep

strange choice

[–] Lamprey@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

In early attempts to contact them that went successfully they met in shallow waters and appeared to enjoy the gift of coconuts.

Im not defending the guy but its not out of nowhere. This would have been a generation or two back for the sentinelese as well though, so no telling if the same acceptance would be met today

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not saying it's not strange, but so long as it's not tampered with I'd appreciate the gesture.

[–] FumpyAer@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Unless one or more of them dies from the diseases that are on it that the broader world is immune to.

Also, considering they historically have attacked all intruders to the island, they would probably just hurl it into the sea.

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 7 points 2 weeks ago

You're reading far too deep into a comment that I'd appreciate someone leaving a jar of mayonnaise on my doorstep.

Portman is the same guy who had some questionable sexual contact with the Andamanese

Portman continued to take photographs of the Andamanese in Port Blair until the end of his stay in the island, documenting information about their anthropological details, showing a marked interest in measuring the penises of the Andamanese. Portman often traveled without other British personnel, preferring instead to be accompanied by Andamanese servants with whom he engaged in sexual relations. Portman repeatedly praised the male Andamanese body, writing that "many of the men are very good-looking; as they have none of the thick lips, high cheekbones, and flat noses of the negro type; though the women are rather of the Hottentot Venus order of beauty".

[–] eyyImwalkin@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

white guy

They have, that's why they kill them on sight now.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago

Literally risking their lives for what?

At least the old storm area 51 meme was so tongue in cheek no one took it seriously and people just…were there.

Is the Almighty Algorithm which incentivizes this kind of shit, not a religion unto itself at this point?

They should crucify Mr. Beast and do the Eucharist with Feastables and Prime

[–] Kuori@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

i genuinely think shit like this warrants the death penalty. leave those fucking people alone.

What’s wild is that this isn’t even the reactionary I’d assumed who was going to do this, who has since stated they still intend on doing so doomer
