Lemmy is open to the point that on some instances you can see who voted on what - @RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com - comment

I feel like a version of this guide gets reposted weekly, but it's always out of date.

u/theFallenWalnut over on that other site updates these regularly.

They also now link to !purchasewithpurpose@lemmy.world but I don't see anything posted there. Maybe a better place to start reposting these

I love how the alternative to American chatting apps is yet another centralized American chatting app running on a plethora of American services from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Cloudflare etc. And based on phone numbers where they can easily cut down comms for Europeans at any given time the US gives the orders

Also, your phone can get located and your phone calls can be intercepted only by knowing your phone number (look up ss7 attack)

Tidal is owned by Block Inc, listed in the US, founded and run by Jack Dorsey, formerly of Twitter.

for office, collabora office and onlyoffice not being mentioned rlly surprise me Ksuite isn't supposed to do office things... It is more like a microsoft 365 alternative.

Sadly an american hedge fund has a sizeable (majority?) stake in deezer.

Is there a specific reason why Spotify is not suggested as an alternative to YouTube Music and Apple Music?
To my knowledge they are a Swedish company.

I imagine the us political environment enforces such behavior to maintain a market position in the future.

I don't see it as a political statement but rather as a symptom of the political environment.

In EU you don't need to bribe politicians to do business

[โ€“] Humanius@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

That is fair, I was not aware of that

Yeah but still I rather use a company like spotify than companies from a fascist country. And spotify replaced youtube for me which I lately mainly used to watch veritasium which is now also available on spotify (even without the in-video ads).

[โ€“] Humanius@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Wait.. Since when does Spotify host video content?

[โ€“] saimen@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

I had the same reaction. But apparently it does. I guess because they realized there is no real alternative to youtube.

[โ€“] Humanius@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That may be, but shouldn't it be up to people to decide for themselves whether they want to support Spotify or not?

[โ€“] brrt@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

And people can decide for themselves. Just as the author can decide to include/exclude things they deem appropriate.

It's unencrypted messages make it a pass.

Libby doesn't seem to be a thing outside of NA, I just can't find any libraries that support it

[โ€“] fatcat@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Working it Austria at least, but of course more limited supply. Would love to find a good Audio Book Service which is not Audible. :(

[โ€“] klu9@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Librivox? Admittedly, only public domain books. https://librivox.org/

[โ€“] fatcat@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

Librivox is pretty nice, although quality varies a lot. But I'm very grateful it exists.

[โ€“] Flisty@mstdn.social 1 points 3 days ago

@protogen420 @Blaze it's used in Britain as well, but up to each local authority what their libraries use. Mine has that and BorrowBox (which has more audio imo). I have it loaded up on my Kobo.
They also have PressReader which means I can read all the news magazines. Use your local library, everyone!

Noticed a small thing: in the How section the leading / line spacing is very big in the first paragraph, the second paragraph less so but still more than in the other texts.

[โ€“] Blaze 1 points 3 days ago

Well spotted @FallenWalnut@lemmy.world if one day you see this

Wasn't proton owner actively and very publicly supporting US republicans?

[โ€“] j0ester@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Someone stated Proton CEO is not for Republicans.
