VPN services like Mullvad, Proton, and similar providers often claim not to log any user data. However, recent developments, such as Apple removing Advanced Data Protection (ADP) for iCloud in the U.K. due to government pressure to create a backdoor for encrypted data, raise important concerns. This leads to a critical question: If the U.K. government were to demand user data from a VPN like Mullvad, and Mullvad responded by stating they don’t store any data (which is true), wouldn’t the U.K. then force them to either shut down their servers in the country or start logging user data? It seems contradictory for such VPN services to continue operating servers in countries with strict data retention laws.

Additionally, many countries prohibit torrenting, yet VPNs still provide users with the ability to torrent through their servers. If these activities are non-compliant with local laws, why don’t such countries simply shut down these servers?

Is there something I’m missing here?
