Today's game is Halo 4. Me and my friend ended up reversing our decision to go to Halo Reach then 4. The game looks amazing, i can't help but feel like it's missing some of the Halo feel to it though. It kind of reminds me more of Doom 2016 (despite being 4 years older). It's still fun to play though, just feels off.

I had this fun bug where an Elite was A-Posing in space after i killed him. It was funny to see, so i selected to use it as the main screenshot.

The game does have some wonderful landscapes though. Nowhere similar to Halo 3's or Halo 1's psychedelic-esque landscapes, but still they look pretty. They remind me a bit of The Shire in the Lord of The Rings. I think it's all the green probably:

The levels feel a bit longer in this one, and a bit harder than Halo 3's. To help combat this we ended up trying to ramp a warthog into the next area where it doesn't belong. We got it up the lip that was stopping us using a ghost, but right after rounding the corner the Warthog was hit by a Grunt and his Dick Brigade of Fuel Rods and that was the end of that thing. Here's a screenshot of the poor Warthog after we left it to continue on with our journey.

In the area after this, i kept having a reoccurring bug where my PS5 controller would just disconnect and i'd have to restart. It was that specific area only though. I don't know if it's because of Linux, Proton, or just a MCC issue, but i had to spend the whole rest of the level playing with Keyboard and Mouse. Despite never doing it, it turned out to be easier than i thought.

Overall i think i greatly enjoyed the other Halos better, but i'm not ruling Halo 4 out until i beat it to give it a fair chance. The controller bug was definitely a mood killer though.

Me and my friend had just made it through the first two levels which I don’t think have any of the new AI, but somehow they feel both smarter and dumber at the same time. Like they can hit shots ridiculously well, but also, they’ll just stand there staring at you sometimes

Just got there like less than 30 minutes ago. I have mixed feelings on how it ends.

Knowing how it kind of gets undone later kind of makes it feel meaningless, not to mention killing such a pivitol character feels like a bad move. The plot was a bit hard to follow for me, so i'm still not sure why they had to die at the end. I think if i could have followed the plot better it would have been easier for me to digest, i'm not 100% sure about that though. Though, i was sick for part of it so that may be on me.

Also, the final boss (if you could call it that), from what i understand, was a QTE. My game bugged out so only my friend could control it, but if i understand correctly that it's a QTE, that feels kind of lame to me.

The fact that you didn't really understand the plot is not your fault: 343I Halo games until H:I have an obsession on requiring you to read books to straighten up the story.

If you have questions such as:

Why are the covvies the baddies again?
What does the Halsey cutscene have to do with anything?
Who the hell is the Didact?
Why the hell is the Didact doing things?
Who the hell is the Librarian?
Spartans on the Infinity? Wasn't 117 the last Spartan or something?
Was that ending a QTE?

... it's because none of those questions are answered within the main plot of H4.
Some answers (3,4,5) you can find in books, some (1,2,6) in Spartan Ops (I never even played those), some (7) here on Lemmy - yes that was absolutely a QTE for a final boss in a Halo game.

If it's any consolation for Cortana's death being undone later offscreen, SPOILER AHEAD, her death's undoing is also undone later offscreen.

...

... on second thought, I lied a bit. Halo 4's main story does answer the first question in the list above, and the answer is "A lot can change in 4 years".

The book ones are especially disappointing for me, along with the QTE.

You said that they only stopped with this stuff with Halo Infinite? Am I going to be missing much if I jump Halo 5 and go straight to infinite or would you suggest playing 5 just to be safe?

I wouldn't know, actually. Halo 4 is the last game whose campaign I played - since H4 is in the MCC, H5 is not on PC, and H:I costs too much for my opinion of it.

Halo 5 is infamously more book-dependent than Halo 4, and ...

(spoiler block that I should have used in my previous comment)

the two things in H:I that follow from H5 are cortana bad and Infinity runs away

... , so IF you want to skip Halo 5, worst case, you may be missing how you ended up where H:I begins.
There may be a reference to a certain Spartan Locke here or there, idr.

I don't want to spoil your fun, so I'd say you should run through H5 if you're planning to play Infinite and if (unlike me) you wouldn't have to buy an Xbox to do so.

To answer your first question: I can't say too much about a game that I only vaguely remember from watching a playthrough on YT, but from what I do remember, H:I is somewhat more self-contained.

I think I can probably get ahold of Halo 5 without too much hassle. Worst case scenario I ask to borrow it from my usual Halo Co-Op partner because I know for a fact the has a copy. Thanks for the opinion. I’ve been eyeing Halo: Infinite all day considering getting it with the next Steam Sale, so the forewarning is appreciated

I’ll be sure to talk about the ending when I get there. I don’t hear much about it compared to other Halo games so I’m interested to get to it
