Video Game Modding
A community to discuss video game modding.
While video game modding is typically associated with PC gaming this community isn't limited to just that aspect. Things like source ports/game engine recreations, emulation and ROM hacks, and even modding games on console all are neat avenues for discussion!
Guidelines:
-
Be nice to others.
-
Don't post lewd NSFW photos or videos. Discussion, in the context of modding, is allowed but may fit better in a different community like !lewdgames@lemmynsfw.com.
-
Avoid clickbait titles. Even if it means altering the original suggested title.
-
Avoid dumping links. The body of a post can be used to provide context, a summary, a question for community discussion, or additional sources for example.

Feel free to reach out to the moderator. If you want something added to the guidelines section/stickied posts or require anything else.

I'm wracking my brains trying to pinpoint the moment but it was so long ago it's a bit of a blur. If we don't count playing (and attempting to make) custom maps for StarCraft: Brood War or Counter-Strike I think it might have been for Diablo 2 back in the day. Though truth be told those were more like cheats if I recall - map packs with pre-revealed maps and the like. And I think there was an auto-loot?
Proper modding I think was installing early WeiDU mods for Baldur's Gate 2 back in what, 2004 or so? Would probably have been the old ease-of-use mod at the time plus stuff like romance tweaks, the "happy patch" and bonus merchants. Plus a ton of modded voice packs and portraits.
The earliest thing in my experience is probably modding GTA 3 on PC as a kid. I remember discovering some of the game configs had editable plaintext form and I used that to mess with NPCs, like making them jump really high, infight each other, or giving cops a hoe AI so that I could pick them into my car and make them do the thing. Later I discovered their textures were also easily editable and made some really ugly edits in paint. I was also into weekly/monthly gaming magazines, some of them came with CDs and they started putting actual mods there so I started installing those. I think it was still dial-up times when this started, getting mods from internet came later. I even made a website with some GTA 3 mods/skins back in the day. It was ugly as hell, and I was like in 5th grade in school.
