I mean the instance says all are welcome, and I welcome you guys from over there in Michigan, I'm just wondering what led to the creation of this community about this town in the US on a Dutch instance.

Welcome to the federation. Where the instance doesn't matter, and separations are made up (by instance admins).

Was wondering the same thing myself lol. But it's federated so in the end it doesn't really matter.

It's listed on the Awesome Lemmy Instances repo as one of the instances with no downtime, isn't blocked by any other instance and hasn't blocked any, so it serves as a good general purpose instance.

Ann Arbor is only 2.5 hours from Holland.

Really got no clue, was suprised as well. Something to get used to with federation ;)
