Ah yes, an anti-person. Anyone who comes in contact with it will be zeroed out of existence.
When the person and anti-person are annihilated is there a release of photons? Or is the energy release more intense?
Mostly X-rays but depending on gender there can be some Y-rays
I believe (what with not being an expert at all) that the energy release upon annihilation is directly related to how positive or negative the person is.
So would my cynical, pessimistic ass just expel rainbows and happiness if I touched Nega-me?
I have bad news. You are the nega-you. The real positive you is out there somewhere in a Library.

Glad I'm the super cool nega-me, who doesn't read books AND probably rides a motorcycle and stuff.
My guess: a count increments upward when the entrance door swings open and downward when the exit door swings. If one person holds the door for a few people but they exit individually, the count gets messed up.
You have to scan your student card on entrance and exit but I think it gets messed up if someone gets put through by the desk staff without scanning.
I'm guessing it's an error state. Reporting an impossible number is better than reporting an incorrect number.
People counting is annoyingly hard.
You can't go by doors opening or light barriers because of the issue you mentioned.
Using e.g. cameras mounted on the ceiling kinda works, as long as you have a small area to cover, but they use a lot of processing power and are still not accurate.
Going by CO2 counts or VOCs is possible, but lags behind and has to be calibrated per room (and is still inaccurate without good ventilation).
I wish there was an easy solution, especially for smart homes.
Why does ~~SkyNet~~ your smart home need to know how many people are home?
Because that would allow me to do a bunch of automations like automatically turning off lights when leaving the room, or transferring music between speakers so it follows you. I've actually implemented both of these, but you have to carry around a Bluetooth beacon, and it's not fast enough to be fully seamless.
This is what happens when there are slightly more ghosts than people.

21.25 extra people have left the library. There's 3/4th of a person lurking somewhere among the stacks.
Correction: 3/4 of a dead person. Either way, it's concerning.
You may not like it, but this ratio is what the perfect amount of people actually is.
