Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

    O&O shutup 10

you'll love your windows machine once you turn off the bullshit.

    [–] flying_sheep@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 years ago (3 children)

That might be acceptable if they didn't turn at least half of the bullshit back on with every bigger update. And some things just can't be turned off. E.g last time I checked it was impossible to tell Windows not to β€œrecommend” setting edge as default browser in the fucking start menu.

Who told you it was impossible? Let me be clear, the things Windows support people say are "impossible" certainly are possible, they just aren't recommended or authorized by Microsoft i.e. Breaking License Validator for endless Valid activation.

The really "impossible" ones often require a lot of work, such as patching dlls or exe files, they're still possible though. Microsoft and their stans can argue "but security" but the fact of the matter is that windows is already insecure garbage, it's not going to get any better and arguments that it will are almost 100% cope. If security was a real concern they would've jumped ship long ago to a Unix system like Linux.

Yeah, and if you patch things like this you break updates completely. Luckily I switched to Linux before thinking of doing bullshit like that.

I've already tried it before, can confirm it breaks updates completely, also breaks the UWP apps since they depend on update functionality to keep working.

Should note that even though I still have the computer it was installed on I don't use it anymore, I've moved on to better Hardware and Linux.

Its time to start replacing dll files

    [–] uint8_t@feddit.de 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

pro tip: replace all the dll files at once using mkfs.ext4

    [–] HelloHotel@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I got an error when trying to do so

' mkfs.ext4' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

    You can download it here

Just get brave browser and set that as the default. No issue.

If you need to go out of your way to periodically turn off half the OS in order for it to be good then it's not a good OS.

Leaving aside the fact you can't turn everything off without either knowing exactly what you're doing (at which point begs the question why you're doing it rather tjan the better option) or being willing to blindly follow some tutorial at the risk of bricking your machine, disabling all the bullshit windows does is way more time consuming than installing Linux for no real benefit.

For my machines, i would be forced to use windows if the smart people didnt make proton and wine. Otherwise Ms puts you in a bind where you put up with it or lose access to software. EXEs hold any software hostage thats not also compiled for other platforms.

I'm just rocking this LTSC Windows 10 version for the next 7 years, don't mind me.

    [–] angrymouse@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I did it with windows 7, and tried to do this with 10 after debloaters came to it. But 1 year ago I had to work with a win 11 machine, after I saw what I would be inevitable using in the future in my machine I decided to do a full switch to Linux. I just can't, windows were always a decently customizable SO but they are trying to make it a macOS with ads
