Any extant remains of any kind of ancient mechanism at all being written about as "did archeologists just find ancient computer???"
This is pretty cool though (right?).
Have you seen Clickspring's reconstruction project? He's been working on it for the better part of a decade, including a two year pause to publish a paper about it and a side series about making the tools that the original artisan could have used.
It’s such clickbait, because even something like an abacus is indeed a digital computer. But still not the most remarkable bit of technology even in ancient cultures
My favorite things they've found though are mechanisms geared towards portraying an earth centered astral system. Incredibly complex mechanisms dedicated to an incredibly complex model of astral movement. It reminds me that even if a mechanism is complex, that doesn't mean that the model that it generates is an accurate interpretation of events.
