I don't know if I would agree with everyone should have one. But, every law abiding citizen should be able to get one. I would love it if people were required to take a gun safety course that includes a proficiency test to own one though. Probably to own anything semi automatic. What good is the ability to form a militia if they aren't proficient with their weapon?
The problem with "law abiding citizen" is that who defines what the laws are, and who sets those laws may or may not be an ally of the people.
I get what you're saying, and agree with the intent. There's just more to gun rights/access than who follows arbitrary laws.
Fair point. My intent is to say those that have committed things like murder, armed robbery, etc... probably shouldn't be allowed to have a firearm any more.
I figured that's what your intent was :)
And I'm right there with you. Once someone crosses the line into the kind of violence that could/would lead to the use of firearms against others in a harmful way, that's where it becomes necessary to limit their rights.
I might still be open to individuals still being allowed highly supervised access even then, like at a very controlled high security range, but that isn't a realistic option.
I think locals should be able to ban guns in the public space but if they do then it should apply to law enforcement as well with an exception for a special unit that responds to people breaking the ban. I do think people should be able to have what they want on their property but travel restrictions like no bullets in guns or clips ; bullets, clips, and guns all have to be in separate locked containers that meet a specific spec possibly with trigger locks on the guns as well. There is just a difference between a large city and way out in the country.
That's already what happens though. Different municipalities do restrict different firearms. ARs and various other semi automatics were banned in and around Chicago long before they banned them statewide. In Illinois you also aren't allowed to transport a loaded weapon unless you have a concealed carry permit and it's a concealed pistol (at least last I looked, I moved away years ago). I'm sure other places have similar restrictions.
Courts overturned the handgun law im not sure where the AR sits but unfortunately we have not been consistent to allow localities to decide these things. Its funny to me because I always think about the quintessential western thing where when coming to town the sheriff says the firearm is not allowed and they will have to give it to him till they leave town again.
I wonder how true that was or if it was pure Hollywood.
It feels sensible enough to be true but I feel like the most pro gun folks tend to also romanticize the old west which is why it nags at me.
Was always against open carry, thought it was stupid. Who would be dumb enough to be openly armed?! Now that fascists have taken over, I want to carry my AR-15 to demonstrations and ICE interventions. Suddenly, out of nowhere, these animals dial it in when guns are present.
“An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.”
― Robert A. Heinlein
Ran into a hunter last fall that was seething to kick my ass. He was extraordinarily polite because I was sported a pistol on my pack.
