One thing to note is that dvds are lower resolution than most people are used to now, that said, local storage is the way 100% even at lower resolutions.

Its surprisingly good actually. Modern video streaming uses all kinds of compression techniques so the advertised resolution is mostly just advertising.

They also still make dvds of modern stuff.

Dvd on a dvd player plays great, you are correct. Ripped dvds are like native 480p regardless of your settings (unless upscaled) because that is the native resolution on the disc. Modern dvd players upscale on playback afaik.
