TIL that the Washington football team is from Washington D.C., not Washington State.
I also recently learned that the Pentagon also isn't located in Washington state. This shit needs a disambiguation page for real life.
Football teams are generally named after the city they’re in, not the state. The state of Washington is home to the Seattle Seahawks.
With the exception of the New England Patriots, who are named after a whole region because they wanted somewhere cheap to build a stadium and no one outside of the region knows where Foxborough is.
And Arizona Cardinals, named after the state, of course.
I want to toss in for consideration the creative committee that came up with the “Houston Texans”
FC Bayern München means "Football Club Bavaria Munic" (Munic is the capital of Bavaria, the federal state) we take things quite literal
Not to be confused with former XFL (Xtreme Football League) team the Texas Houstons
Except for the Carolina panthers who are named for two states.
Yeah, there are exceptions to the rule.
To cloud the issue further, The Pentagon is in Virginia and The Washington Football team plays in Maryland and practices in Virginia.
Also the last time the New York Giants played in New York City was 50 years ago.
