MODERATORS

Image is from this article, of a Chilean copper quarry.

Title is a reference to Trump's social media post about copper, which was, as usual, mostly deranged.

Trying to follow Trump's administration is pretty difficult, but as of right now, he is threatening 30% tariffs on Mexico and the EU starting on August 1st, as well as new tariff announcements on a bunch of other countries (including, bizarrely, a 50% tariff on Brazil), and also apparently a 50% tariff on copper, which the US imports half its supply of and is, of course, a very important metal in many applications.

I'm not sure what the plan is to bring back domestic copper production beyond hoping that it just sorta works out, but prominent copper producers, such as Chile and Canada, seem both concerned and confused. Reuters had a line that made me chuckle:

Boric said he was awaiting official communication from the U.S. government, including whether the tariffs would include copper cathodes, and questioned "whether this will actually be implemented or not."

Big mood, Boric.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

lula-bars Lula just said that if he's still healthy by then he'll campaign for re-election in 2026 to stop that "band of crazies". He'll be 80 yo next by then

What do we think? Mistake? Should be propping up a successor like with Dilma?

That was my first thought but when you think about how close the 2022 election was, which pitted Lula, unarguably the left's strongest candidate, against Bolsonaro, arguably a weak candidate for the right, I'm sure there are more palatable bolsonaristas the right could run with, it could really be that the PT won't be able to win without Lula.

From portuguese language twitter sometimes I see news about crazy brazillian right wingers that are apparently popular, but not so much about center-left or left-wing figures that could take Lula's place, I only hear about Guilherme Boulos but he's much to the left of Lula (from what I understand) so he likely wouldn't be the PT's candidate

The left needs to start programs of training people in charismatic speaking and voice training. The greatest communists I can think of are all incredible speakers, I would argue it is the single most important skill that should be trained.

Without training people in this we often run into an issue of successors not being good or popular enough.

whats with the current ageing and dying socdems/pseudocommies demanding they lead their movements into the grave?

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The mistake happened years ago when he didn't start prepping a successor then. At this point it might be too late.

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

He did prep a successor very thoroughly once, that was Dilma (from the left of the PT), but the right and the media hated her so much that they impeached her and arrested him, so he scampered to prep another successor, that was Haddad (from the right of the PT), who lost to Bolsonaro.

Then he won in 2022 but barely and without a solid parliamentary majority, he's barely been able to do anything, so I understand why he must not have given much thought to he himself prepping a 3rd successor, but I don't think the party or the broader brazillian center-left have either

What do we think? Mistake?

He's probably the strongest candidate the Left/Progressives current have, he has a huge popularity and is well known.

That was my first thought but when you think about how close the 2022 election was, which pitted Lula, unarguably the left's strongest candidate, against Bolsonaro, arguably a weak candidate for the right

Jair Bolsonaro is not a weak candidate, he had the support of most of the Brazilian bourgeoisie, Protestants Mega-Churches, the Military and a bunch of Liberals and Conservatives politicians, besides having the votes of all former voters of PSDB (the old right-wing party that ruled Brazil during the 1990s). He did everything possible to win that Election, from arresting Lula's supporters to actually paying people to vote for him, and yet he still failed. What happened in Brazil was almost a miracle, because the media spend the entire 2010s - 2022 trying to destroy PT and Lula's image and somehow he still won.

Boulos is a good left-wing social democrat to democratic socialist candidate, he's basicallly a bit more moderated 1980s - 1990s Lula. Another candidate is João Henrique Campos, he is the son of Eduardo Campos who died in a very sus airplane accident. João is also the great-grandson of former Brazilian Democratic Socialist leader Miguel Arraes, who attempted to resist the 1964 coup but was exiled. I read that he's quite popular in Northeast but that his internal policies are of a right-wing social democrat/liberal.

it could really be that the PT won't be able to win without Lula.

Yeah. But I would also like to add that part of this is PT/Lula's own fault as many people here have said, but also, the media and right-wing politicians spend decades destroying the image of the party and of many possible sucessors of Lula.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 41 points 1 day ago (1 children)

if he's legitimately the best candidate at the moment that's his fuckup for not creating an ideological successor.

you have to develop the next generation and if you don't you're trying to fail. see: US democrats.

[–] s0ykaf@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

that's his fuckup

it's a bit of the whole party's fuckup and a bit of there simply being no available individuals, especially after marcelo déda's death and the coup

the last 20 years have been shit for the left (in part because of the PT, ironically), the only guy who resembles early 00's lula is boulos and he's not in the party

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

yeah. he's in charge so it's his fault, but there are 20+ other people who are complicit in the failure and maybe could've mitigated it depending on how the organization works. (and if the org structurally prevents leadership development it's on the people who made and kept it that way)

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 32 points 1 day ago

I think he needs to pick a successor. Same with Evo and Maduro. Run sure I guess but there needs to be some continuation plan.
