Still think the water bottle thing is stranger. Why do Americans just carry around giant water bottles everywhere? They could be going to the store and they bring an enormous water bottle like they're going for a ten day trek.

The high today is 110°f (43.3c). You better believe I'm walking around with a bottle of water.

Euros walking around in 25c weather sipping their .5 liter of water for their .5 km stroll to the cafe

While I'm lugging 64 ounces of water in 100 f (real feel 107f) on my 5 mile hike to work

Edit: brought receipts

Is it the carrying a water bottle at all that confuses you, or the fact that it's large?

If I wanted to bring 1 or 2 cups of water with me I would just chug it right there at the source and carry it in my body. I don't see the point of any water bottle smaller than a liter.

How much water do you drink a day?

[–] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's both tbh. The act of bottled water and carrying bottled water is already insane, because yes I agree I would just drink water before leaving. But it's also even more crazy how much water they carry around, because what possible reason do you have to carry around like a litre of water living in a city every day???

[–] The_Grinch@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

I drink a liter in half or a third of a day and there isn't any water available to me which is as good as my tap water, and as available as my water bottle unless I'm in a sit-down restaurant (Which I have been like maybe 10 times since 2019, total). How much water do you drink in a day and how/where do you drink it?

[–] pootzapie@lemy.lol 43 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nothing free in America, not even a quick sip of water

[–] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But that's not even true? Most businesses in the United States will just give you a free drink of tap water if asked.

where is this? touristy/rich people land?

"[Blank] for paying customers only" is the sign of the Real America.

if you're not seeing it, you are in one of the amusement parks.

Lots of parks have those free drinking fountains with the bottle-filling function. Schools, hospitals, government buildings, and even Walmarts have them too.

Edit: these things

[–] Chump@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is a law everywhere. Free drinking water is one of the few decent things in the us.

Some places may be hard ass about it, but just go to a fast food place and ask for a water cup. It’ll likely be smaller than a soda cup, but just fill it up again

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

it's the law but you have to be prepared to throw the book at slimy business owners to actually excercise it, especially when alchohol is involved

most food places maybe. i wouldn't expect a hardware store to give me a cup of water, but any chain department store type place has a water fountain somewhere

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

so do hardware stores lmao America sucks but there's literally water fountains in 90% of stores

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 hours ago

Well that's not true

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

What's wrong with being hydrated?

Edit: I totally do this lol. I drink ~3L of water a day and carry a (reasonably sized) water bottle everywhere. It's hot as hell and I want to be properly hydrated at all times!

[–] VibeCoder@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

Personally, I’m very disconnected from my body and find routine a much better way to stay hydrated than waiting to be thirsty because I won’t notice until I’m super dehydrated
