George was curious? That means either he' dead, or his curiosity lead to discoveries of the horrors of the world where he learnt the pain of unbounded intrigue, so he became jaded and now refuses to break from his routine for fear of finding something even more horrifying.

I prefer the second option. That means he is alive and can still find love as a wiser but sadder monkey. There is more room in a broken heart.
