I remember growing up, being able to go to McDonald's on Sunday or Wednesday and get like a whole big bag of burgers/cheeseburgers with $5 because they were 29-39 cents each.

I used to play sports in the summer, and hit Mcdonalds for $1 burgers on the Valu Meal with $1 any size drinks in the summer.

I was 17 in 1998 when they started this promo. We had hockey practice the same day as the hamburger deal. My friend/teammate would borrow his mom's minivan and we'd pile 6 of us and all our gear into a Ford Windstar. After practice it stunk so bad, we'd roll down every window we could, which wasn't any behind the front row. We would hit up the McDonald's drive-thru on the way home and buy as many burgers as they would sell us. The maximum was 20, which always seemed crazy when we initially hefted the heavy bag into the van and started passing it to the back row. Turns out 6 teenage boys have no problem putting down 3-4 of those dinky burgers and we rarely had leftovers, just piles of wrappers that never all made it back into the bag. The nostalgia of digging through piles of paper, trying to find the last burger at the bottom of the bag is something I haven't thought about in years. Thanks for reminding me!

Seems like it's from the 50s or 60s; but this was the 90s!

(Though... Shit. I am still old enough to be a grandpa 😩)

That alone would cost like €5 here. It only ever makes sense to go there when I've been driving for the whole day and just need to eat plain old boring food. For another few euros I can go to something like the Salsa Shop and get a massive burrito that'll keep me full for half a day. Ironically, it's often multiple times faster than THE fast food restaurant.

Haven't been in a while, but these were 2 for $3.50 pretty recently around me. The thing is, they are small and you wouldn't think it could fill you up, but whatever chemicals they add to these things makes just 1 small burger feel like you overate. Eating what, for me, is like 3 bites of food should not make you feel that way. It's unnatural and you can feel the unhealthiness. 🤣

Gimme the big-ass burrito made by the little old Mexican lady in a truck around a construction job site. It'll cost the same, but taste better and not make me feel like I'm gonna die.

That's usually a feature of good food. I agree that it's odd that a hamburger would be that way, but usually what causes that is fiber.

Oh yes. I’m a convert to burrito shops. Cost is about the same as fast food chains, without the chemicals and corporate crap, and I get to support local families. Also, delicious. Win, win, WIN!

Yeah McDonald's is purely for on the road. Other food in its price range is leagues above. There's better options on the road too, but McDonald's is so small and minimal, it's easy to eat with one hand and steer with the other; no mess.

Where's here? I checked and in Finland it seems to be around 2,55€. I long for the days of 1€ cheeseburgers but it's still far from 5€

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ok, but it's also only for 9 hours on one specific day of the year, that day also only happening every 4 years

[–] sprite0@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 day ago

they had 3 cheeseburgers for $1 promos back then a lot too. My mom was poor and she would rain burgers on us every time they would get that cheap.

[–] ExtraMedicated@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I remember that. My dad would get bags of them and put them in the freezer. I eventually got so sick of eating those shitty burgers.

MacDonald's cheap fried food was a large contributor to America's obesity epidemic.
