To be fair, NYC is a huge city and so its mayor is a major figure in the US. The most recent population I could find was 8.8 million people, vs. the total US at 340 million. NYC is, therefore, home to 2.6% of the US population. As a polity, NYC represents more people than the 9 least populous states (Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, N Dakota, S Dakota, Delaware, Rhode Island, Montana, and Maine) combined. In fact, there are only 12 US states that have a bigger population than NYC alone, and one of those is New York state. From a population perspective, the mayor of NYC is equivalent to the governor of Virginia. That's why everyone is freaking out about this so much. Plus he's young and very handily beat the candidate backed by the DNC establishment, showing cracks in what they assumed was a solid neoliberal core.
NYC has more population than like 38 individual states, what you say is true.
