Evict Hungary from the EU and NATO

[–] Pilferjinx@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Just suspend them until they meet NATO and EU standards again. It would really suck for Hungary and it's neighbors to fall into full Russian control.

[–] Allemaniac@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

one might think the people of Hungary would feel the same way and would protest accordingly, but so far everyone seems very apathic to the fat autocrat in charge

This just hands over an EU country to the Russian and Chinese influences, which is why Hungary is where it's at in the first place.

This is the kind of thing that needs covert counter-ops: undermine and question orban at every online forum, constantly make Putin look bad, push against every single government policy, etc.

So basically what they're doing to every other western nation.

This just hands over an EU country to the Russian ~~and Chinese~~ influences

Far too late for that. Orban is a Russian shill and should be treated accordingly.

Few years outside of the EU, with closed borders and no new funds may cause Hungarians to proudly follow Romanian way with Orban ending like Caucescu.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why are you crossing out China?

Did you miss the massive investments China is doing there, to buy influence?

Here's one: https://www.businessinsider.com/satellite-photos-show-byds-massive-hungary-factory-taking-shape-2025-4

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why are you crossing out China?

Because Orban is Putin's puppet, irrespectively of any Chinese investment.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

He who sucketh a dick can accommodate a second one.

[–] Honytawk 2 points 1 day ago

Lose one, gain multiple.

It isn't as big an issue as you make it out to be.

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

So basically what they’re doing to every other western nation.

You mean western nations' government policies are all perfect and people pushing against them are Russian shills? And making their politicians look bad?

Maybe those governments and politicians are Russia-infiltrated, and these complaints are resistance.

[–] FishFace@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

You say "maybe" like it's some unknowable quantity, but we can see what is going on in Hungary and that it's getting increasingly authoritarian, and we can see Russian attempts to influence western democracies through bot farms and the like. It's not unknowable; the evidence is there.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is the sort of stupidification of issues that we see from bot farms: cherry pick one point, then blow it out of proportion so that there's no more nuance, no more gray, no room for middle ground.

Everything becomes black and white, polarised, simple: with us or against us.

Fucking moron.

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world -1 points 17 hours ago

You are literally saying "fucking moron" to something you imagined yourself and I didn't write.

You are right.

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I don't think there's any need to evict it to pressure it to vote the right way.

So Hungary blocking things is a collective performance.

Or maybe not, then the leverage they gain from veto is more than the pressure put at them. In such case that leverage is apparently damn big and they are a small country.

[–] Green_Mouse@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I think if it comes to that, the Hungarian people will be VERY pissed off.

[–] XenGi@feddit.org 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Should have voted differently then.

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly they should already be VERY pissed off

[–] Bravo@eviltoast.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Orbán does just enough for farmers to keep them voting for him. Keeping Ukraine out of the EU is part of that - if Ukraine were a member, Hungarian wheat prices would plummet.

[–] Green_Mouse@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

It's so selfish and low...

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That's their problem.
