Oh man this is a rabbit hole.

So back in the old days, you had a subreddit called 195 which had only one rule: if you visited it, you had to post the most recent image in your gallery.

At some point, you can imagine, the posted images became either quite graphic, political or downright offensive, sparking lively debates in comments.

This lead to r/195 eventually closing. A lot of new communities were started. r/196 was maybe the biggest and is still around on lemmy on at least two instances.

The more political, and sometimes hateful, folks of r/195 would sometimes brigade r/196 leading to lots of bans. The rise of federation led to a place for these people, a place we now call Lemmygrad.

How the schism exactly took place, I don't really know. Maybe someone else has some more info.

In any event, r/196 is just the community name. If you visit the communities on lemmy you might find a lgbtiq+-friendly community with a lot of funny stuff. The tankies are pretty much all gone.
