People talk shit about Oblivion but watch the Wha' Happen on Demon's Souls and you realise Oblivion directly lead to Dark Souls and all related games. So few games can claim to have such an influence.
Apparently even the discworld golbins were made in part due to the goblins in oblivion. Terry prachett "researched" goblins for the book snuff by exploring the goblin caves in oblivion with the help of a mod he helped design lol

There's many games that could claim to spawn subgenres lol. So many indies live under the shadow of Cave Story and Yume Nikki. Ultima Underworld is basically why FPS (and Souls-likes for that matter) even exist. Every RPG can ultimately be traced back to at least one of these games: Wizardry, Ultima, and Rogue.
I love that that entire series is named after one really bad line read from one really bad The Ring based Dreamcast video game.
I didn't realise there was actual history to it. I thought it was just internet speak. It's surprisingly good for what it is as well, Matt actually talks to people and gets first party sources instead of just doing wikipedia level skims like that series could easily be. He's also been on podcast that position him as a comrade as well
