Zohran Mamdani’s victory wasn’t a fluke. Right now, it is being built upon in Seattle, three time zones from the Big Apple. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has been gliding along a path toward reelection. He has garnered the support of developers and tech oligarchs. All the opinion leaders are along for the ride with the mayor. Of course, he is going to win.

But weirdly, a vote of the people has challenged that wisdom. Last year, Seattle housing activists had gathered signatures for the City Council to pass a tax on excess compensation to fund social housing. The tax, to be paid by employers, levies a 5 percent tax on individual compensation greater than $1 million. Raising $60 million, and with bonding, this will enable the production of thousands of economically integrated housing units in which no tenants will pay more than 30 percent of their income in rent.

The City Council set a vote on this measure for February 11, expecting a low and conservative turnout. The council also put a competing measure on the ballot, which took $10 million from an existing fund for low-income housing to build a few units of social housing.

The corporate community, led by Amazon and Microsoft, poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into an opposition campaign. Mayor Harrell got into the act, with his face on all the opposition literature. The die seemed to be cast for a victory of the status quo over actual social progress. Only it wasn’t. The election resulted in a 26-point victory for social housing over the mayor’s proposal.

That got Katie Wilson, the founder and general secretary of Seattle’s Transit Riders Union, to rethink the 2025 elections. Katie had already launched the Transit Riders Union, gaining free transit for school kids and low-income people. She organized successful minimum-wage campaigns in Seattle suburbs. She developed the Jump Start tax, a tax on employers when individual compensation exceeds $189,371. Without this tax, Seattle would have been savaged with cuts in public services.

So Katie decided it was a good time to become mayor, to gain the power progressives need to transform our city. She embodies the policies and hopes and dreams of most of us in Seattle who can’t figure out how to pay for childcare and rent increases and healthcare, or those of us who recognize and want to provide the solutions for these issues.

According to the filing, Lipnik has been fired from Apple “for failing to follow Apple’s policies designed to protect its confidential information, including development devices and unreleased software and features.” The filing also accuses Lipnik of failing to report “multiple prior breaches” to Apple.

When you sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), you’d best protect the secrets. Then again, the guy who left an iPhone 4 in a bar didn’t lose his job. Wonder what the differences are between them.

An American obsession is attracting investments in baseball fields, volleyball courts and football camps, intensifying the gap between families with means and those without.

Josh Harris, a founder of the private equity firm Apollo Global Management, and a partner have been assembling one of the largest collections of youth sports properties in the country.

The youth sports industry, according to the Aspen Institute, generates about $40 billion in annual revenue, dwarfing other forms of entertainment. Last year, for example, the domestic movie box office grossed about $8.7 billion.

About 60 million children play sports, and the average U.S. sports family spent $1,016 on its child’s primary sport in 2024, a 46 percent increase since 2019, according to the Aspen Institute’s latest parent survey in partnership with Utah State University and Louisiana Tech University.

The private equity titans Josh Harris and David Blitzer are among those who see a big opportunity. Over the past three years, Mr. Harris and Mr. Blitzer used money from their family foundations to start Unrivaled Sports, which has been buying baseball camps, flag football fields and youth leagues to assemble one of the largest collections of youth sports properties in the country.

Why did it hurt when he said he didn't want to talk to me?

The way he moved on so quickly and said he felt nothing for me immediately after I stopped doing as much stuff for him.

The way he was always on-and-off, like "I love you". Then "we should break up".

The way he would sometimes feel nothing for me even in the relationship.

He suddenly didn't like me anymore. He wasn't focused on a mutual, loving relationship, but more on what I could give him and do for him. He was always happy when I comforted him like I was his parent. Always happy when I did stuff for him, like make gifts, buy gifts, etc. But not once did he try to help me or do anything for me, not even like my interests or watch my movies when I did, like he said he would! Then, he suddenly didn't like me and we broke it off.

Now, his bio says "A owns me", but when I ask him about it, he says that it's "some dumb quote he found".

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Swallowtail Butterfly (1996), a dystopian drama about a group of youths trying to survive in the slums of an alternate-future Japan that is flooded by immigrants around the world. An orphaned girl is forced to go live in a junkyard with a bunch of other outcasts and try to make ends meet, as she comes under the wing of a sex worker. This is considered one of the best Japanese films of the 1990s, and one of the best works of director Shunji Iwai’s career; he is best-known for the anti-bullying drama All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001), which we have not yet watched.

After that is Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), a comedy centering on a small-town beauty pageant and the rivalries between the contestants. An up-and-comer (Kirsten Dunst) aims to upseat a rich family’s stranglehold over the event, and is willing to do anything to achieve her goal, up to and including murder. Hilarity ensues as events escalate, largely in mockumentary style. Pretty much Heathers (1988), but about a beauty pageant. Letterboxd loves it, though, so let’s check it out. It is the only notable work of director Miachel Patrick Jann; he is a one-hit wonder.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

Be there, comrades!
