Just press LB (if you're on Xbox) to skip down in larger chunks. Same as in Skyrim.

Every time this happens for me, it does actually move, just very slowly. It takes a minute or so, then it passes a threshold and continues inside.
I don't have screenshots, but if I remember correctly, two of the fauna on Gagarin in Alpha Centauri were fish when I surveyed the planet. I ran along a coast for quite a while to get all the scans.
