To qualify for some benefits you can't have any assets. The state forces you to sell your assets and pay for care before they will chip in.

You're right but I don't think the general population is as right leaning as they believe they are, either. It's a team they root for and identify with.

Anecdotally, I have very conservative family members who will agree with many progressive ideas until they realize they're agreeing with democrats. Then they're pissed!
