If you can live with one character extra, @t<tab> also works for me. @b<tab> lands me on Bing, but if you don't use Bing you can just remove that search engine, I imagine.
I think it needs cooperation from the app side. That said, Mullvad has Mullvad browser, which I assume has similar functionality if you're a customer of theirs.
FWIW, you can now also use @bookmarks, @tabs and @history.
