with admins just housing an agreed number of users as part of the "cost" of being a Lemmy instance

aren't admins already paying out-of-pocket to host the instance? and what benefit would there be to host an instance if they're all exactly the same?

matrix' p2p system is planning on doing something akin to making the client also the server and having a universal account system or something like that

mastodon.social is defederated from most other instances from what i can tell mainly due to being too large, so i'd assume the same would apply here

apparently they didn't actually remove the discriminator and instead just hid it whilst giving everyone #0

probably a terrible answer but on nixos i just add the packages to my config, which does technically apply because it's also an immutable distro
