Have you thought of trying UNRAID. It will introduce you to world of docker. Lots of videos out there to get you started.

Your hardware is fine for truenas.

I have tried few of them but I highly recommend you to try UNRAID. It will introduce you to world of docker containers

OP, look into photosync in app store! I use this app to sync photos and videos from apple devices to samba. You can download photos as well.
